Back in the day about all I used were small Beetle Spins and small Roostertails. Picked up a few of each, but would like to add a few more types...but which ones? Never used a crappie jig. However, I'd I go somewhere strictly to fish for panfish, I generally bring my fly rod. You can get a nice redington or white tier combo from BPS for a bill, 20 bucks worth of flies and fish for months on them. It's also a blast fighting big bluegill on the fly. Quote

And if those are not what you want to buy, the 1" Gulp minnows on a dropshot work just as well. There are days when the bass bite is slow I dropshot bluegills, and often, for hours on end, catch one every single time I drop it down in the "cone" to a fish. Quote

Jay Gee, I bought a home built 3 wt. for using on panfish from a guy well known on the Texas Fishing Forum. Casting with it was a humbling experience. Am using a double taper line. Previously I had only used an 8 wt. GL3 weight forward, and that was at least 13 years ago. The 3 wt timing is so much different I could have cast as far without the rod. I'll post back about the River Runner once I've had a chance to use it a bit. I like Fenwick rods also. Smalljaw talked me into getting a couple of the Elite Tech Smallmouth casting rods. Almost broke my arm before I gave in. Already had a Techna AV casting rod and an old 9' glass spinning rod for fishing with live nightwalkers. This rod hasn't been used in a l-o-n-g time.......only because I got into B/C reels once I got back into fishing and fish artificial lures almost exclusively. Quote

I haven't tried this, but I do know the larger panfish around here are often suspended out over the main basins where pretty much nothing else is during the summer, while the smaller ones will be in shallow cover and other places scattered around the lake. That being said, the bitsy minnows and some beetle spin type baits should keep you busy. Another lure I've had some decent luck with for some larger gills is a small little mirrolure jointed crankbait. Quote

Tom i like a lot of the small rebel lures and own a small collection of them. The last one i bought though was a Tad Fry, designed to imitate a tadpole, its been deadly on bluegill for me. a lot of times fish come up and hit it before i can even start a retrieve. its a real small bait and only one treble hook to deal with. The thing i like about rebel lures is theyre great for panfish and catch bass as well... Quote
