Topwater in winter?

hello all!

i live in washington state and i want to start fishing with buzzbaits, frogs, etc. i was wondering when i should start (month wise) fishing these lures. i know what time of day and weather conditions to fish them, and how to work them, i just dont know when to start fishing them. thanks

Well I wouldn't say you can't have any success with these baits during winter time. It is possible to catch fish I would imagine they wouldn't be as productive as say spring summer time.

I read a article a couple of years ago where Rick clunn was fishing somewhere and I'm not certain if it was a tournament or not but I seem to remember him saying it was and a late spring snow storm hit and it was cold.

He went on to say that the fish just weren't interested in anything he threw at them. He said he was in a spot the water was smooth as glass and the snow was coming down hard. He remembered it was absolutely quiet all around hardly a sound at all.

So with the conditions being what they was and nothing else had worked he tried a buzz bait. Well I don't remember all the details of the article but he started catching fish.

So yes I think you can fish them year round just some times of the year are going to produce better than others

I would say most guys fish them come spring on through out summer and into fall. I like to fish them on cloudy days myself

read an article about big bass hunters that used buzzbaits all year. They said it was specifically a big bass bait in cold water.

I have heard of hunting big bass down during the winter with buzzbaits. Hit coves and shallow flats - specifically target rocks or rocky structure on sunny days during winter with your topwater. Some lunkers gravitate toward the shallows since darker rocks will heat up faster. If I could, I would retrieve EXTREMELY slow. 

Unfortunately, there is 3" of ice in my shallow waters... :'(

Me and some friends went out on the lake today and caught 16 out of the 22 total bass on topwater. Mainly flukes, senkos and Rage Toads. I know, i know, i live in Fl.

Have never fished them in the dead of winter but have worn them out in the Fall

Up here in maine every thing you cast on the water now is topwater! :'(

Fish are moving to slow for something like that, but you could give a try.  If you do I would reel them really slow.

I don't usually do any winter fishing,but I can't see why topwater wouldn't work.It's great any other time.
