popperpitcher Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I'm new to the forum and hoping to learn about warm water fishing. After chasing trout for a long time my eyes are no longer able to tie on size 18-24 flies comfortably in low light levels and many of my favorite waters are now posted. Now I am mostly after warm water species in the Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario estuaries. About the only serious warm water fishing I have done in years past is fly fishing for bass with Peck's poppers hence my user name. I just bought a used 12' Lund boat/trailer and 6hp motor and now need to set it up and learn to use it effectively. Quote

popperpitcher Posted August 14, 2012 Author Posted August 14, 2012 Clayton, Thanks! One place I am interested in is Hemlock Lake but I am also interested in some fishing closer to home in the Charlotte neighborhood of Rochester. Oak Orchard is one place I want to check out. Quote

Oak is a great trout and salmon river but also hold some really good smallmouth and walleye. Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted August 14, 2012 Super User Posted August 14, 2012 Pt. Breeze is free and its right off the park way easy to get to from the Charlotte area. Lake Alice is free as well and maybe 5 miles away its a nice small lake with LMB, SMB, Walleye, Pike, Panfish, and giant carp. Quote
popperpitcher Posted August 14, 2012 Author Posted August 14, 2012 Is Lake Alice physically seperated from the lower Oak Orchard Creek? I's like to find some edible perch and sunnys! I won't eat anything from Lake Ontario west of Sodus Bay or it's estuaries. Fun to go pester bass though! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 14, 2012 Super User Posted August 14, 2012 Hemlock and Canadice lakes would be ideal location to launch a small boat like yours. They are limited to 10 hp or less and 17' and under anyway. There other special rules here as well, such as no contact with the water. They are beautiful, but tough sometimes. I generally fish them from my kayak. They are both pretty clear, but have solid weed lines. I generally find fish a little deeper than other, less clear lakes. While electronics aren't a must, they sure help locating deeper weed beds you can't see from the surface, and the first drop off just past those weed lines. Active feeding bass often patrol that break. Jigs, deep cranks, and drop shot plastics are good tools. Quote

Lake Alice is separated by a big power dam then runs a mile or 2 up to the upper oak orchard runs maybe 20 miles past my house and hits another power dam and then Glennwood lake. Lake Alice is experincing excellent blue gill off the main bridge during the day with great crappie fishing in the evening according to the fishing hotline for the county(585 589 3220). I can confirm that as i drive by there everyday and the bridge is packed some times depending what day of the week it is. Quote

Don't laugh but, at 62 I have never fished for or caught a crappie! How big and are they edible? I assume both lakes are reletively clean since DEC has no health advisories. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted August 15, 2012 Super User Posted August 15, 2012 Lake Alice is extremely clean Glennwood is clean I guess it don't look clean haha. I haven't caught a crappie out of Alice in a few years but the last one i caught was a good size they are pretty tasty also I usually keep the ones I catch ice fishing but I don't catch enough during the open water months to warrant keeping them to eat. Lake Alice can get pretty crowded on weekend with fisherman and pleasure boaters this past weekend there was easily 50 trucks w/ trailers in the small parking lot. Quote
