The Young Gun Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Will a smallmouth hit my bronzeye frog? The JR? Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted August 10, 2012 Super User Posted August 10, 2012 I have caught 1 on a bronze eye only 1 though Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 10, 2012 Super User Posted August 10, 2012 I think a smallmouth would hit it but I highly doubt you will fish that type of a frog where smallmouth are going to be. I did get one on a Yum buzzfrog but that is an entirely different bait. Smallies will hit the same baits largemouths hit but I have yet to see a smallmouth in thick weedbeds underneath mats, but if you want to see try throwing the frog around boulder strewn flats in the early morning on a lake that has a population of smallies. Megastink Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 I once caught a 3# smallie on a Bronzeye 65 Tropical White. Skipped it under an overhang and he was there. Wasn't a reaction strike either, as I walked it about four times before he hit it. Smallie WILL demolish a frog, but like Smalljaw said, you will doubtfully fish it where smallie live. 1 Quote

Te smallie I got last night was in thick weeds but came on a jig flipping it into "holes" in te weed bed. Now I have caught a lot of smallmouth on horny toads but they were Texas rigged with a 3/8 bullet weight around beaver dams and other log jams in the river by me that's loaded with smallmouth. Quote
Super User webertime Posted August 10, 2012 Super User Posted August 10, 2012 Last week a buddy got a 3.5 on a little Spro Popper in 1 fow up in the weeds on Champlain. Our hypothesis was that it was adopted by the Largemouths and never told that it was adopted or shown a mirror. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted August 10, 2012 Super User Posted August 10, 2012 I have caught one on a full size Spro frog, a decent one too. 4.5lbs, but just that one. I have also caught a couple on zoom horny toads. Where I like to frog fish most of the time is not prime smallmouth habitat. The one good one I did get on it, hit it in 7-8 feet of clear water, with a rocky bottom and scatterd grass. I just wanted to see if I could........and I did. I would rather fish spooks and poppers though, all those extra hooks help with smallmouth. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 10, 2012 Global Moderator Posted August 10, 2012 Never caught one on a frog and I'd have to agree that rarely are there many smallmouth in the places I'd fish a frog. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 12, 2012 Super User Posted August 12, 2012 Smallies will hit just about anything at times. I'm sure they will hit frogs, but again I don't fish frogs in smallie type areas. Quote

I have caught a lot of smallmouth while largemouth fishing in places you would think they never be. i don't see why they would not hit a frog but it is defintely not my first choice. Quote
