How Do You Buy Lures?

When you go to buy a new product, be a lure you havent used alot or if you want to try a new model of one you already use what is your approach?

Do you buy 3+ hard baits or bags of each of your go to colors?

Do you pick up 1-2 of several diffrent colors to make sure your covered, and then if you decide to switch over buy multiples of the colors and sizes you'll throw most often?

Senkos, craw trailer, maybe a ribbon tail worm. Those are my random experiments in colors, and I'll pick up a pack almost any time I'm shopping. I do tend to stick to certain color patterns though; browns, whites, yellows, blacks, blues, or a combination of those.

Lately I've been hooked on top waters, so I've picked one of those up pretty regular. Be it a frog or Pop-R or wiggle wog.

I've got so many cranks/jerk baits/spinners it really takes something jumping out to get my attention, plus cranks tend to run up the price tag quickly.

I used to buy 1 of everything but now i know what colors i like and work for me and buy 3-5 of the same lure same color. Ebay has been great this year iv been buying lots of single lures mostly plastics but i have scored a few lots of LC pointers and rapala husky jerks.

If it is plastics I buy green pumpkin color to start with. Seems to work in any color water that I fish. I can always add chartreuse via JJ's magic. If I then catch a lot of fish on them then I will branch out. With hard baits I go with natural colors like shad and blue gill. Then expand from there if I am successful with them.

If I'm buying a lure that I haven't used but want to try I will only buy one and it will be in a natural baitfish type pattern or a neutral color such as black or white depending on what it is and what is available and that is for hard baits like topwaters and cranks. For plastics I usually buy a bag or pack of something new and again it is going to be colors like green pumpkin, watermelon or black if it is a worm or creature type bait and for a swimming bait it would be pearl, white, chartruese, and other baitfish colors. I should say that when it comes to the hard baits, if the price is reasonable I may get 2 of a new bait but no more than that and for existing baits that I use and that work well, that is a whole different game, I usually look to buy 4 or more and I always like to have at least 2 of a proven color.

Most of the colors are natural colors I will use, I don't vary to far from center on those.

when I do go to get baits I have 3 different tackle boxes, one for night fishing, one for normal every day fishing and one for stained water fishing or dark water.

The night and stained water fishing are very small in comparison to the every day tackle box, so when I go, it's not for much, I know what I am going for, if for some reason they are discontinued I look for something simular, I will only buy one bag instead of multiple until I give them a try, if they work I will buy in bulk, as far as crank baits etc..., I usually read the reviews or post on here, posting here will get the reviews you are looking for in your specific area of the country as well.

When I buy something "new" to me, I buy one single bait if it's a crank/other hardbait, or one package if it's a soft bait. If it finds a home in my stash it won't be long before I have dozens of them.

find tackle that works and buy in bulk. in the long run it saves you time and money.

I keep my lure selection and colors simple but I have hundreds of each. If I am trying a new bait I will buy one or two and go from there.

I sort of stick to the basics for baitfish in our area, I have a lot of perch colors, sun fish, and blue gills, because that’s what’s the majority of our bass’s diet. I guess I always figured that I can’t go wrong with offering what they are used to eating. As far as what might influence my decision to purchase, for cranks it’s always depth and size of lure. I will usually buy one, then try it out for awhile before I commit to purchasing the whole color spectrum…..lol but I agree with Fishking 247, once I find what I “think” works, I tend to buy a few extra and store them away for replacement purposes…

I pretty much stay with what has always worked for me, on a whim I may buy something that catches my eye. I've been wanting to try a waxwing, but my $3.00 jigs are really producing, can't seem to pull the trigger for $20 for a lure that may last me a cast or 2.

I usually buy a lot of colors and styles of soft plastics, figure out what works then buy around 5 packs for tournaments. Cranks I seem to go through them like crazy so im always buying in bulk.
