Besides being able to kill and spinnerbait and let in fall or slow roll it when you want to, what makes you choose a spinnerbait over a crankbait or vice versa?

When I want a PBJ sandwich, I want a PBJ. When I want a burrito, I'll fight you for sour cream. Fish like PBJ. There's miniscule wisdom buried in there.

I have had a lot more success over the years with a crankbait so I prefer a crankbait over a spinner most of the time. However, when there is just too much cover to snag I will go with the spinner. I also tend to use a spinner more in the winter so I can slow roll the bait for those lethargic fish. 99% of the time when a fish hits a crank I catch them due to the super sharp treble hooks. I have had a lot of hits and misses with spinners.

I like the pbj and burrito metaphor.  I guess I'll just throw both until I found out what they like or according to cover.

Thanks for the quick responses. ;D

All kinds of various factors that will tempt me to pick one up over another. Sometimes one factor suggests one or the other, and sometimes a given set of conditions doesn't preclude me from trying both if I feel that's what will trigger strikes on that day, at that time.

I go with a spinnerbait 90% of the time.  It is a personal preference for me.  I feel more comfortable with it and have had more success with one.  If I am going for a deeper retrieve or the fish just aren't hitting a spinnerbait I will change it up then.

I am a spinner bait kind of guy, I haven't caught any bass on cranks yet. But again I don't throw them that often.

I fish a lot of weedy lakes up here in Southern Ontario so I like to use a double willow spinnerbait, but when I fish lakes that has rocks, stumps, laydowns, hard bottom, etc, I really like the throw the crankbait. I love cranks even though I don't catch much on them.

The crankbait is my go to lure in most situations, that said I wouldn't be caught on the lake without a few spinnerbaits especially if there is a lot of weedcover. If I'm night fishing it's tough to beat a Black Rattlehead spinnerbait with a Colorado blade.

You can't kill a lipless crank and let it fall? Also when it comes to reaction bites in grass it is a lot easier to rip a lipless crank out rather than a spinnerbait. You can also bump timber with a lipped crank and kill and and let it rise or keep reeling and give it an arratic action. When it comes to grass that is in more than 4' and timber I would take the crank. Also, fish see a lot more spinnerbaits than cranks.

I have caught more bass on spinners than cranks. unless you count a floating rap as a crank

Thanks for all the input guys! I'll definitely use your tips when I get a chance to fish and since I'm in New Hampshire that will be never!

typically I will toss the crankbait in more clear water (my lake is really clear). I found that if the water is calm and clear I have a hard time getting a spinnerbait bite as the fish sees it too good.

As soon as the wind picks up and stirs/chops up the water and things are a bit hazy, I toss the spinnerbait.

I like spinnerbaiting better, it is a hassle free lure. Sometimes I hang the crank up and it gets tiring. Both work great tho.

Maybe its a confidence thing with me but there is no comparsion, I catch way more on a crankbait than a spinner, and I throw a crank way more than a spinner ;D. Although I did see some really good looking spinnerbaits on ***s site, awesome looking spinners :)
