tnriverluver Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I just ordered two to update the electronics on my latest boat purchase. If you use one tell me your likes or dislikes. This boat currently only has a Hummingbird flasher in the dash that doesn.t work correctly and a very early Eagle Cuda up front that does a decent job but wanted something better. I would love to spend 5 grand plus but the bank acct. wouldn't allow that I tried to stay with the smaller units even though my eyesight now sucks!! These big screens just look like they would get in the way constantly. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted August 6, 2012 Super User Posted August 6, 2012 I have the elite 4 2d sonar/gps unit. Love it so far, zero issues. I went with the traditional 2D sonar after seeing my buddys Elite 5 DSI unit in action, was not sure about it, but I don't know if he had it set up right, but still, it didn't impress me. I run a small color Lowrance X-67 on the bow and the Elite 4 on the console. Quote
Todd Driscoll Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Great units at the price point. As ww2farmer indicated, DSI will provide a different return when compared to 2D sonar. DSI utilizes a narrow beam, whereas 2D sonar coverage is a wide cone. DSI also has much greater target resolution and detail. It just takes some on-the-water time to adjust to when you are used to looking at 2D sonar. Quote
tnriverluver Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 Sounds like I made a decent choice. Thanks for the replies. The newest depth finder I have used was made around 1995 LOL so I will have a new learning curve with these for sure!!!!! If I ever get good with these units I would love to get a side scanning unit later because it would work great in the waters I normally fish. Quote
moguy1973 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I have an Elite 4x DSI (which is the non-GPS version) on my kayak and it works pretty well...Only had it on there for about 4-5 trips so far so I'm still kind of learning how to use it, but it really shows whats down there. You can clearly make out down brush and trees, although I haven't marked too many fish on it yet. I've mainly used it for bottom structure finding, depth and, water temp. The color screen makes it real easy to see even in bright sunlight... 1 Quote
