Captain Obvious Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 What length, action, and power rod do you use for hard topwater baits. I plan on this rod being able to handle the following baits, crankbait style wake baits, spooks, poppers, and prop baits. Thanks Capt.O Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 5, 2012 Global Moderator Posted August 5, 2012 I use a 6' 2" M/XF for poppers and small walkers. I can really influence what my bait does because of the fast recovery of the rodtip. I use a 6' 6" M/F for bigger walking baits for the extra casting distance and a little more power when I'm fighting fish. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted August 5, 2012 Super User Posted August 5, 2012 I like a shorter rod too. I use a 6'6 Lightning Shock M. Quote
NitroZ9 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I'm using a Denali Michael Murphy Signature model Jerkbait/Topwater rod. It is a 6'8" Med. with a moderate action. This rod was developed specifically for working baits with your rod tip held down. The handle was made shorter to help accomodate this. I like the moderate action for the same reason I like it for a crankbait rod. It has more flex throughout the upper half of the rod which helps keep trebles from pulling out, particularly when you have the fish close to the boat. I also feel like it allows you to get a better hook up on topwater fish. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 6, 2012 Super User Posted August 6, 2012 I use a 7' BPS Crankin' Stick, medium or medium heavy power. They work great for every topwater lure out there IMO. Quote
