Fishing Deepwater, 15-30 Feet

I fish shallow water, 10 feet or less, 90 percent of the time, so i dont really know what to fish when it comes to deeper water. Id like to be able to expand my range of fishing a little bit more. ive seen the pros use crankbaits, spoons, football jigs, etc. but im not sure what brand and stuff like that. could someone tell me what they like to use for deep water. id prefer something that can get down to the bottom.

When I fish that range with a jig I typically throw 1/2-3/4 for the 15-20 or 3/4-1oz for the 20+

15 fow isnt real deep. Years ago a guy told me when your fishing 20ft deep thats only as deep as your boat is long. I never really thought of it that way but sometimes 20 fow seems real deep and he put it into perspective.

Cranks I usually go with a bandit 300 or dd22 I also have some custom builds from Big M I use alot.

A 4" grub or tube married to a jighead hopped across bottom structure will catch a few bass. Keep the weight just heavy enough to feel when you're fishing it.

You can't go wrong with those baits.

crawl or slow roll a football jig half ounce or heavier depending on how deep and how fast you want to work the jig if its really clear go with green pumpkin or if thers very low visibility usually theres not in deep water so i would go bith a black and blue jig with a rattle or two and use a trailer with alot of flapppin action my favorite trailer is a net bait paca craw

I was fishing a drop shot with a 1/8 oz weight (spiining gear, 8lb. floro, Zoom finesse worm) on Table Rock a couple of days ago in water 20-25 deep. Casting it out, waiting a couple of secs for it to reach bottom, and dragging it back real slow, caught a few fish doing that. We were getting them on spoons also at those depths, sometimes with a vertical presentation, sometimes casting out and using a rip - pause sequence. Hopkins spoons and Cabelas real image spoons were what we were using.

The Biffle Bug made by Gene Larew is a great bait for deep water.Just go with the heavier head i.e.7/16 oz.Cast out, let it sink to bottom, and slowly wind it back in.Make sure it stays on bottom as you can feel this.I have caught some big ones in this manner.

3/16 oz. drop shot or a 5/16 oz. finesse jig are my favorites when I get deeper than 15 feet, but I'll use my whole arsenal-- just go a little heavier.

When fishing deep or deeper than you are used to, keep in mind you will need to know a little bit about structure and how it relates to the fish you are fishing for, it will take some time so be patient and don't give up.

You will find more quality fish with the baits already listed in the above posts, personally, in deeper cover I like medium to deep Strike King crank baits, spinners, and swimming jigs, if there is structure such as a drop off with a ledge I like a 3/4 to 1 oz jig slowly pulled off of the drop off and let it fall to the ledge, I use the jig head with all kinds of creature baits, my favorite is the Smookin Rooster and the Biffle bug.

Find yourself some of the longest points you can find and fish the deeper parts of the points, there is usually some interesting cover and structure at these locations.

If you have a rocky/gravel type structure the spoon is one of my favorites, the shad feed on the alage that cling to the boulders and gravel and bouncing a spoon off of areas such as these can yeild some good fishing all year long.
