bigt89 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 i just started using senkos not to please how expensive they are and after 1-2 fish there destroyed but onto the next. i had put a senko on finally found a color that worked. the d**n bass swallowed it. was so far down was way in his throat down to his stomach. i have never had this issue before. i always get them by th elip they have never swallowed a whole hook. i could not get the hook out, and sad to say i dont think the poor fish made it. is there a certain tool thats easy for taken hooks out? i always used my own hand but of course this is the first time i could not get down to the hook. i have to run out to bestbuy tomorrow and dicks is right next door im hoping what ever i need they will have. any suggestions so this don't happen again? Stouty Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 If a fish swallows a hook They have a special digestive system and are able to digest hook, the soft plastic is what you need to attempt to remove, they can't break that down. Quote

This is nonsense..... A fish can not digest a hook. If you leave the hook in the fish, it WILL die. No, the hook will not rust away either. Follow the link provided by (00 mod) it's your best bet to get the hook out, and save the fish. Quote

Bass Dude Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 If a fish swallows a hook They have a special digestive system and are able to digest hook, the soft plastic is what you need to attempt to remove, they can't break that down. Where did this idea start?? A hook will rust because it's underwater. It takes a long time for this to happen and even longer to rust to the point where it would break. The fish does not have any magic metal dissolving fluids. I will stand corrected if there is any scientific proof of a fish's digestive tract has the ability to dissolve metal. Quote
davew41 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 for the 1 fish issue use a O ring and then use a circle hook this will help solve... 1 the o ring will let you get multiple fish per bait as the bait is not being pierced at all.. 2.. the circle hook will most times get hooked in the corner of the basss' mouth eliminating the gut hooking.. If you have To T rig the bait watch your line a lot more....... seems like you are not carefully doing this and the fish is getting gut hooked.. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 31, 2012 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 31, 2012 Fish cannot digest hooks, period. It's an old wive's tale. It's been proven over and over. I really wish this myth would go away. 1 Quote
MT2 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I think the other thing to keep in mind as one guys said is to really watch your line. 99.9% I fish a stickworm on a weightless t-rig and its probably the one plastic bait Ive found with a bite similar to a jig. If your not watching closely it is very easy for the fish to swallow it. Recently Ive used these baits for both my fiance and 6 year old son to try to give them a easy bait that lands fish. But after a few trips out with each Im rethinking this because of exactly whats happened to you. I guess its time to get them back on the old true tested bait that really got my intrest in bass fishing going as a teen. A 3 hook twist worm! Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 31, 2012 Super User Posted July 31, 2012 First off, Senkos are expensive. But they work. So just how "inexpensive" should results be? However, there are cheap work-arounds to this problem. Here's a link that I posted awhile back that illustrates my method of preserving a single Senko through the catching of several fish: http://www.bassresou...rigging-my-way/ Now as far as the hook problem you are experiencing, go to a 1/0 Gamakatsu INLINE circle hook - #221311. I prefer the red, but regardless of the finish you choose, I always crimp down the barbs. You will rarely hook a fish deep with these powerful hooks and extraction is a breeze without the barb. Employing these two techniques, your problems will disappear. Quote
GoTakeANap Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 1. From my experience fishing with senkos. You are waiting to long to set the hook on the fish if it shallows the hook. Watch your line closely like everyone else said. 2. Wacky rig your senko. It will save your senkos in the long run and you will be able to catch more fish per bait. 3. There are a bunch of different brands of senkos. They all aren't call senkos. Yums version is a dinger. Strike King is a Shim E Stick. You have a lot of cheaper brands of stickbaits to choose from. If I'm not mistaken, the senko name comes from the yamamoto version of stickbaits. I use the yum and strike king version all the time and catch fish with them. I only buy the yamamoto senko for its 7inch version. I've caught my biggest bass on the 7inch. I would give them a shot in the future. IMO the cheaper version last alot longer for me then the yamamoto senko. Hope this helps. Quote
Busy Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 +1 on setting the faster and watching the line. I don't like the action using a circle hook with a senko. I usually only use a circle hook on non-moving, or live, baits where the game is waiting. Quote
bigt89 Posted July 31, 2012 Author Posted July 31, 2012 i texas rig them. alot of grass in the pond i fish. the only time i have ever used circle hooks is chunking season off shore. i have heard about that wacky rig or what ever its called but i dont have that tool to insert the oring. gotta try that one thing out that was posted with the rubber band looking things. Quote
RobertBG Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 no need to buy a special tool, just find a peice of metal line from home depot's plumbing section that is just large enough to drop a senko inside, grab some orings while there and go fishing.Slide the rings onto the tube, insert senko and pop a ring on where you want it. NBR Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Glen hit it on the nose. Hooks in fish do not rust away especialy in fresh water. A hook left in a fish equals 1 dead fish. I also think this is an old wives tale probably from salt water. In addition to the line through the gills method I use hooks with the barb pinched down. I've pinched them down for more than 30 years and I don't think my lost fish rate with pinched barbs is any different than with barbed hooks. Quote
detroit1 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I caught a lm a few years back that had a hook and about 8" of line coming out his butt. The hook was already passed, a little rusty, and the mono looked like about 10# test, with about 6" of it still inside. Bass may not digest a hook, but if it is small enough, they can pass it. Quote
