Hit the rif at 5:15 am, 2 nd cast and tarpon on, short battle as the hook was spit on 3 rd jump, too big to land anyway. A few more casts and I get another strike on my 1/2 oz feather, there was no quit in this guy. Drag screaming and line peeling off I was forced to chase it down on foot, from the tip of the jettie back to the sea wall (I later paced it off as 300 paces, like about 275 yds). I did the unforgiveable thing of nearly locking my drag down, still didn't stop it and I was lucky 20# braid and 30# leader held (hard to beat an improved clinch), finally with help we pull it up, the permit looks at me as to say " hey buster is that all you got".

Wow Snook! That ones a beauty! Is that pushing the limits of a Florida shore landed Permit. I now they can get a little bigger, but not gonna be landed on shore?

We do get bigger ones here at the inlet. The people that target them use live or frozen crabs and fish for them at night using some serious conventional gear. You have read enough of my posts to know mh rods and 4000 spinning reels is my standard motis operundi, don't know how many more years I can keep doing it, age is creeping up. I have tried many times in the keys but that was my first permit.....ever ! I can see why it's a sought after gamefish.

That is a serious permit from shore. I have caught a few out in the gulf on spinning tackle and a jig. They fight like there is no tomorrow. Congrats on your first.

That's awesome I wonder if that's what iv been seeing here every now and then chasing schools they look just like that when they give me a glimpse on clear days I've been trying to get one but they want nothing to do with anything i throw they are always solo or in pairs. There isn't a lot of info on gamefish in Kuwait. congrats on your first and PB.

Way to go, Stu. You had to be spent after that HEAVY WEIGHT fight. I remember when the world record permit was caugh of the Lake Worth pier. I was 14-15 years old when the biggest arshole, bully, pothead, pier rat caught her on a crab. Thankfully, the record has since been broken. I haven't been to the pier in decades but their used to ne a mount hanging on the wall behind the counter.

Did you take her home for dinner or what?

I gotta admit it was one of the better fights I've had from a fish of that size, I didn't weigh or measure it but I don't think it was all that heavy, but it had a pair of shoulders. I had my pier net with me and if possible I would have netted and released it. You know how far it is from the tip of the south jettie all the way to the back sea wall, well after chasing it down my net was all the back on the jettie. One of the fisherman had a gaf, I gave him dinner, I don't carry an ice chest or ice with me and don't even have a filet knife to cut up on the spot. Even if I did filet it, I don't want with the fish wrapped in my car while I'm fishing.

I almost pulled the trigger on a new 7.5' Star rod today at Tuppens. Yes, Tuppens is expensive but they have the largest selection of Star rods that I know of. Actually, I almost called you to see which Star rod you have.

I'm gong to start visiting you out there as soon as I'm done training the newbee at work.

Tuppens does have a good selection. I have 3 Star rods, my handicraft is on my conventional offshore reel, real nice rod except I wish I would have bought 1 size heavier. My 2 spinning Star's are both steller lite's, my mh 10/20 ( fish above) is probably my #1 used outfit, with a stradic 4000. My Hvy 25 lb is used mostly used off shore, with a soron 60 is for light trolling, some jigging or reef fishing. The pros, very good back bone and excellent casting distance, negatives, reel seat does not seam real solid, I have a shim under the reel foot to shore it up and the tip has a hard feel to it, but I'm used to it.

I really don't post a lot on here anymore, but I always love reading your salt reports. For a long time they've been the coolest thing in my eyes. I wish I could do some saltwater fishing. Keep posting reports, the more pictures the better!

Beautiful permit, and from shore! Congrat's on your first permit!

Fat-G, thanks for the kind words..........I could have used you this morning. Long story short, tarpon was a too big for me to hold my rod and lower my pier net at the same time. Just as well, it's a release fish.

dang stu! that is a monster. i caught one about that size and it worked me----and i was in a boat! right on man. 7seas here in boca has a huge selction of star rods and you can haggle them.

That was my first permit from shore, don't know exactly how big it was. Fight wise it ranks right up there with jack crevelles.

I don't know if I'm jinxed or what, been offshore 3 times in the last 10 days, can't catch anything bigger than a blue runner, can't catch a bass, can't get a snook, can't get a bite on the beach, all I can catch are tarpon, lol. Probably been getting one every other day over the last week or so, to big to lift, been trying to get one for my avatar.

Not complaining, I know I could catch some nice inshore fish on bait, I just don't enjoy it as much.
