bigdawg74 Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 just got this mojobass rod 2 weeks ago, on my second time using it tonight i hit a little snag gave it a pop, not even a big pop, and the tip snaped off aboit 1.5 inches from the tip. i must say i was p/$ed off. i had my ugly stick for over 20 years and it is still going strong and this pos snapes almost right away. i am going to take it back tomorrow and see how it goes. Super User BASSclary Posted July 30, 2012 Super User Posted July 30, 2012 Well, to start off, you shouldn't be trying to free any lures by popping your rod. The reason you can not break any ugly stick is its fiberglass, not graphite. Trying to unsnag a lure with a graphite rod will probably always end this way. Also, you may have inadvertantly damaged your rod, leading to the failure. Any nicks or dings in your rod will cause for catastrophic failure. Quote
tmier Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I love my mojo cranking rod, you should talk to St Croix and try another one. Quote
bigdawg74 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 first off. i am real new to this so what to do and not to do i am pretty clueless. if you get a snag what is the best thing to do? cut the line and count your losses? lthe place i got the rod is usually real good so i think they will just exchange it. Northern Strain Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I wouldnt worry about it if you can get a new rod. However if they dont exchange it at the store you could always try sending it to St. Croix. Your rod should not have broken like this, you probably got a bad one. Yes it could have been user error, but then again it probably wasn't. Hopefully you can get a new one, keep us posted. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 30, 2012 Super User Posted July 30, 2012 The common occurrence of tips snapping from 'popping' free is the line getting wrapped around it, which is what I would venture to guess what happened. I beat on st croix SCII rods a lot and never had that problem Quote

When you get a snag, to try and free it, give it some slack so see if it just comes unsnagged. If that does not work, tighten your line, hold the rod vertical and pull your line away from the snag. You may lose your lure, bend your hook, or snap your line, but you will not snap your rod. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 30, 2012 Super User Posted July 30, 2012 It should not happen with a rod used for the second time, either the rod was defective or your procedure wasn't good. No method guarantees 100% success in freeing from a snag, I use a few techniques that work fairly well. I was dead set against this method until a former BR member convinced me and he was right. Tighten your drag all the way and snap the bow. Another way is too tighten the drag, then pull straight back not allowing the rod to bend, the tip will not snap. If I can't free it with these 2 methods the last thing I try is opening the bail or put the reel in free spool taking all the tension off the rod, set the rod down and I wrap the line around my my shoulder and pull as hard as I can, either the lure comes free or the line /leader will break, providing you aren't using 50# braid, pull the line and not the rod This is a last resort measure, the lure can come flying back. With that long winded response, sometimes you are just better off losing a lure and some line. 1 Quote
BASSHUNTER1961 Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 First of all, the rod could have been damaged before it ever left the store. Have you ever watched some people handle rods at BPS or any tackle shop, pretty scary........ I go over a rod with a fine toothed comb before taking it to the checkout. I was in a sporting goods store yesterday, and a St. Croix Avid had a split 5" long just above the grip. I showed it to the owner so no one would walk out the door with it. I have a St. Croix Legend Series that is 15-18 years old, and been through it all, and is as wonderful as day one. Don't give up on St. Croix. So, my guess is, the rod was damaged when you bought it, you somehow damaged it without even knowing or the line was wrapped around the tip when you popped the lure free and snapped the tip. This would have happened with any graphite rod. If necessary, cut the line and your losses next time. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted July 30, 2012 Super User Posted July 30, 2012 Well, to start off, you shouldn't be trying to free any lures by popping your rod. Have been popping my snags free since my first graphite rod. Over 35 yrs. Never broke one yet. 1 Quote

BigMoneyGrip Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I carry my "winch handle" when I fish. It is a piece of 3/4 oak dowel about 8" long. If (when) I get snagged, I wrap the line around the dowel several times and then try to pull free. With 65lbs braid, I usually get my lure back. With a straight hook. I have the center of the winch handle drilled out and keep a crochet hook in it for picking out back lashes. I can post a picture tomorrow, if you like. Quote

BASSHUNTER1961 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Thanks.... Looks nice. Is that a + side battery terminal cover? Also, what size hook do you use? Thanks! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 31, 2012 Super User Posted July 31, 2012 Popping a graphite rod on a snag isn't going to make it snap unless the angle is steep to the point that you are high sticking. I met a guy at Cableas that was unsure of which rod to get, he just returned his 3rd high end rod, the first 2 were both G Loomis GLX rods and the last one was a St. Croix Legend extreme. He could not explain why these great rods that people rave about keep braking on him, after we talked for a bit I asked him specifically what he was doing when the rods snapped and then we found the problem. He told me that as he was bringing a fish to the boat the fish would try to make a run and he would stop them by pulling back on the rod and it was ok unt the fish went under the boat so since he couldn't pull the rod back any more he simply reeled and that is when the rods would snap, every one of them. Well I told him he was high sticking the rod, he was putting pressure on the rod that it was not designed to take, the rod tip being at 12 o'clock position and being pulled to the 7 o'clock position will break any good graphite rod. He got another GLX as he liked it the best and felt better as he now understood what the problem was, and BTW, I ran into the same guy 2 years later and he hasn't had another rod fail. I'm not saying that is what happened as it was probably a defect but keep in mind that extreme angles can and will have disasterous effects on a good graphite rod. Quote
BigMoneyGrip Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Thanks.... Looks nice. Is that a + side battery terminal cover? Also, what size hook do you use? Thanks! That is a caplug. You could probably find something that would work at a local hardware store. I just stole a hook from my wife and used it. They sell them at WalMart. I'd go there and just pick out a size that you think will work. I used a .6mm I think. I drilled the hole to fit the caplug. Overall length is 6". Quote

jerzeeD Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 how come its always the expensive rods snapping and breaking....hmmm...should of stuck with that ugly stik... Not always true ..my buddy has been fishing for years and never broke a rod. Then broke 2 in one week. One was a pflueger president combo rod (Cheap) and the other was an all star tournament series (A little better quality than a mojo) All star replaced the rod for free for him.... it was not even 2 months old.
