Hyrule Bass Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I have mono on all my reels except for one that has FC. I prefer mono to braid and FC. It works just fine on all techniques, and i've never bought into the hype of the reasons to use other lines. No, braid is not a must for frogs, hooksets work just fine with mono. Sensitivity is extremely overrated, and i mean EXTREMELY OVERRATED when it comes to lines(and rods but thats another story). If FC is supposed to be near invisible underwater then i wonder how come bluegill attack my line. Stretch is only really a major issue on smaller lines, but then again i like a little stretch, it can be a good thing. Line stretch never caused me to miss a hookset, because really, setting the hook with 12lb mono into a 3lb fish isnt really starting to stretch your line at all. The supposed benefit of non-mono lines really arent that major or beneficial to me at all. 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 5, 2013 Super User Posted March 5, 2013 12lb Suffix Elite for Topwater. Everything else is FC with the exception of braid on one spinning rod. Quote
0119 Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Braid is on my spinning reels just for the frustration of twist and I rarely use spinners anyway. I also hate braid. I use 8lb. Big Game for crankbaits, 10lb. for hard and soft jerkbaits. 12lb. Big Game for topwaters, 14lb. for slop fishing and live bait. I see nothing but positives with mono and nothing but negative with braid but the Tuff-line Supercast may change my mind, maybe. Quote
johnD. Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I use either #12 or #15 big game for everything except , flipping , frogs and plastic swimbaits. Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I fish strictly mono, at this point. 2 or 4lb on ultralight, 8lb on M. Just bought a heavier setup that will probably get 12lb. Used to use Stren, but after getting what I think were a couple bad spools, I switched to Trilene XL and really liked it. Why do I still live in the dark ages and use mono? Inexpensive Flexible, works "well enough" in most applications The idea of putting on a leader and depending on one of my knots gives me hives. I'm far more confident in the strength of a single strand of mono. I'm used to it and so it 'feels' right My (highly subjective and error prone) experience has shown that it works. I have only 'broken off' toothy things like Pike and Pickerel (or one very good bass which I hooked after releasing a pick and without checking the line for damage). I also have cast out as far as I can into a relatively deep lake up here and had to make hook sets almost as soon as the bait hit the bottom. With the line as extended as I can make it, I could feel stretch on the hookset but I've never had one come unbuttoned unless I was clearly late or half-hearted on the hookset. I tried braid for the first time last year (Sufix 832, which felt like it cost me a mint) and didn't really have a good experience. I'm debating trying it again on the heavier setup I mentioned above, but not sure. I'm also considering trying a co-poly like PLine CXX or YoZuri Hybrid as I've heard such good things re: them from people on here. If I was a tournament angler where every catch mattered for "dollah, dollah bills, y'all", I would view a lot of equipment choices differently (including line choice). But, for now, things just work fine for my needs. 1 Quote
TrapperJ Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I hate Mono myself, when fishing in trees/brush and it just frays the line so bad. I switched exclusively to Power Pro Braid for everything i like braid (Good Braid) cause it takes a lick'n and keeps on tick'n, fish wraps you up in a tree? no sweat! trees are no longer the razor sharp knifes i remember them to be when i fished mono. I use no leaders. Works great for topwater, it floats! I quickly trained myself to just wait that extra second before setting the hook. I have read read the debate on leader vs no leader, one post and im not sure where it came from but it has stuck with me, if you think the fish can see the line, what makes you think he cant see the hooks? There are no hooks hanging off shads/baitfish or what about all those wires on the A-Rig? Now last year was the first time i really started to use Fluro, cause i liked the action i got better when fishing weightless Caffeine Shads, since the line helps the bait sink a little better and stay down in the water, now this year i find myself putting about half my reels with braid and the other half with Fluro.
