BassCats Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Are you throwing crankbaits and other baits with treble hooks on braid? If so are you using a leader of mono or flouro? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 28, 2012 Super User Posted July 28, 2012 No leader. 20 lb Sufix 832. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted July 29, 2012 Super User Posted July 29, 2012 Unless I'm fishing in the slop, or throwing an A-rig, I generally use a 12lb flouro leader on my braid. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 29, 2012 Super User Posted July 29, 2012 I think if you took a poll here, 50/50 would say they use a leader as compared to those who dont. Fluoro is more used as a leader than mono, but guys do use it. For the money, I would say splurge and get some good Fluoro if you are going to use it. Your only using 6-8 feet for a leader so a 200 yard spool will last a lonnnnnnnnng time Quote
A-Rob Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Although I like braid and can see the advantages of it I throw my crankbaits on 12# yo zuri even around grass....I do tangle it up but I get a fair amount but I get lots of cranks in to and can often avoid most hangups in the grass by being gentle, retrieving slowly and letting the crank float once it hits grass Anyways I love braid but switch to yozuri for cranking/trebles Quote
swarrin4 Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I love braid but not for trebles. I use fluorocarbon for cranks and heavy mono for top waters. I find I set the hook to quick with braid even with a fiberglass rod. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 29, 2012 Super User Posted July 29, 2012 20 lb Sufix 832 with 12lb Big Game leader - fished on Lamiglass SR705R (fiberglass) rod - I think this rod & braid make a nice combo for med/deep crankbait. A-Jay Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 29, 2012 Super User Posted July 29, 2012 Abu Black Max 1600C, what looks like 20# red PP, Daiwa V.I.P. Smallmouth, no leader. Assume reel's original owner threw cranks with it as well since he told me I would be surprised at how far it would throw one. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I've used both braid and mono for popping, and i have to say i like the stretch of the mono for the hook set, keeps the treble from tearing out and i always seem to get a nice solid hook set. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 29, 2012 Super User Posted July 29, 2012 Technically speaking there is a difference between line and leader material, for freshwater use I cut my leaders from mono, I no longer buy any F/C line or leaders. What one uses is their own personal preference, I use 10# braid, 15# in cover with a 15 or 20# mono leader for 100% of my freshwater fishing. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 29, 2012 Global Moderator Posted July 29, 2012 15# invisix floro for sq bill and med diving cranks's. 20# braid w/ 15# floro leader for ripping traps. Mike Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted July 29, 2012 Super User Posted July 29, 2012 Using braid for treble hook baits its no problem, the only thing you have to do is use a softer rod. Instead of a MH, go for a M. This helps for the rod to take some of the load off the hooks when setting and fighting the fish since the braid has no stretch. When trying to go real deep with braid, you need to stick to a thinner braid in the 30# area. Quote
flyeaglesfly5186 Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 30lb Spiderwire Stealth Braid with an 8lb Spiderwire mono leader. Just in case I do get hung up I want to be able to rip the line off without having to cut the braided. Quote
