Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 28, 2012 Super User Posted July 28, 2012 To all the Powell Diesel owners I have a few questions. Overall how well do you enjoy your rods? I'm really interested in the 7'6" MH XF casting rod. Any issues with braid or fluoro tearing up the eyelets? Honestly if you had another 70 bucks and needed another rod, would you get another? Specs say it will handle a 1/4oz bait. With this MH how well can you toss a 1/4oz jig or plastic? How is the backbone on this rod? Any issues with breakage when ripping a bass out of cover? Thanks in advance. I'm really interested in this rod but my local Bass Pro doesn't carry it so I can't fondel it. Quote
BASSHUNTER1961 Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I know your interested in the Diesel and a few others, but have you considered the Berkley Lightning Shock rod? For $39.00 at Walmart the rod is just a great deal. I have a 7' MH casting model and it throws weightless plastics, hollow frogs, and 1/4oz jigs with ease. It has a soft tip, but plenty of backbone , and it has very good feel. Just a thought. Quote

I have the 705CB and I love it! Any issues with braid or fluoro tearing up the eyelets? Using floro, zero issues. Honestly if you had another 70 bucks and needed another rod, would you get another? Absolutely. Specs say it will handle a 1/4oz bait. With this MH how well can you toss a 1/4oz jig or plastic? The 705CB is a MH and it will handle everything from squarebills to 6XDs with no issues at all. How is the backbone on this rod? Excellent. Any issues with breakage when ripping a bass out of cover? None in pulling fish out of wood and weed beds. Thanks in advance. I'm really interested in this rod but my local Bass Pro doesn't carry it so I can't fondel it. I was hesitant, but I'm glad I picked one up from TW. It's made me some tourney money this year. Quote

Super User webertime Posted July 28, 2012 Super User Posted July 28, 2012 I've got the rod you are wondering about. No issues with braid and eyelets. It's really light (not fragile light though). TONS of backbone. 1/4oz baits.... hmmmm I really don't think that I would endorse that. I bought because I throw Frogs and T-Rigged Plastics/Jigs a lot, but I hated re-rigged when I switched from on technique to another, so I have used it a lot for that stuff... It will throw a SPRO baby frog, but not that well. Flipping a 1/4oz jig is easy as long as it has a trailer (IE is heavier than a 1/4oz). I guess I am being long winded in saying don't do a 1/4oz with it, BUT it's still a sick stick. I have not broken a fish with it yet. (wah wah wah). Quote

I will run a rage craw with my 1/4 oz jigs, but I just wondered as it advertises that you can throw it. The tons of backbone I love. Thanks again Quote
Jacob34 Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I also have that exact rod you're talking about. It's the best $70.00 I've spent on fishing gear for quite a long time. I throw hollow bellied swimbaits with it mostly and some 3/4 oz to 1oz jigs if I need to punch through weeds. I've also used it to throw lipless cranks while wiper fishing and it does that quite well too. The rod itself has backbone to spare and I was pleasantly surprized how light is compared to my other 7'6" stick I have. The guides have held up well to braid all season long. The only gripe I have is I HATE foam grips. Other than that it's a great rod and if they had more of a selection I would buy a few more. Tight Lines, Jacob Quote
