Super User eyedabassman Posted January 24, 2010 Super User Posted January 24, 2010 Does anyone fish these old great bass catching lures? I have them and I forgot I had them ! I did fish them many years ago and I will try them again this year. I did like the red and white blade with the deer bucktail in the lite brown with a tint of white. Do you fish them or are they one of the old lures that has been just put on the side lines? :'( Quote
Super User Dan: Posted January 24, 2010 Super User Posted January 24, 2010 I don't use them for bass. I just don't see them as bass lures. I know they will catch bass, but I'm not convinced they'll catch any more or bigger sized fish than a spinnerbait or something else. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted January 24, 2010 Author Super User Posted January 24, 2010 The bad thing about these baits is you sometimes get them fish that have the big teeth! :-/ Quote
Smiths.R Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I LOVE mepps spinners. I actually hunt squirrels just so I can get their tails and trade them in for lures. I think they're amazing...You can catch anything on a Mepps. I catch slab blue gills, crappie, green and brown bass, and even walleye on them. They're one of my favorites. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted January 25, 2010 Super User Posted January 25, 2010 A titanium or thick fluoro leader is a must in cheeseland. Quote

zero Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 this lure is my to go lure for pikes/muskies and walleyes u cannot beat those for specific fishes i occasinly catch bass on them but not too often like the senko Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 25, 2010 Super User Posted January 25, 2010 As a multi-species angler, I use Mepps and other in-line spinners all the time. The bass in my avatar - 26", 7-12, was caught on a 3/8oz Roostertail. In my local lakes, most people fish only plastics - I sometimes think I had some good luck last year by throwing something that no one else was using. In the February Bassmaster magazine, there is a short piece about Iaconelli using in-line spinners as a fall-back bait when nothing else is working. Quote
midnighthrasher Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I got this nasty bugger on a fluo yellow anglia 2. I also caught a couple 1-3 lb lmb that day. Mepps are in my opinion the most underrated lures on the market. That said i dont use them that much but whenever i do they prove themselves. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 25, 2010 Super User Posted January 25, 2010 They work fine, great for smallies in open water. Other than that, they foul up too easily, especially in the cover that largemouth prefer. The BIG bucktails, and I mean BIG, are killer on northern pike in the fall. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I grew up fishing them for bluegills, but stopped using them for years. Mepps Muskie Killers and Giant Killers are great for the toothy creatures. And this season I am going to throw some mid-sized Mepps for bass. Quote
Eternal Angler Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I like using Meeps spinner, but I modify them. I take the treble hook off then add a regular hook on, then a berkley powerbait worm. Just dynamite to use! Quote
RandySBreth Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Of course you could use a version that doesn't get snagged easy...http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/cabelas/s7_116719_renderset_02%3F%24main-Small%24&imgrefurl=http://www.cabelas.com/p-0012985116719a.shtml&usg=__UCeoi0p43BxZcEZE5-FRNf5Kx6o=&h=110&w=380&sz=4&hl=en&start=16&um=1&tbnid=e4al3W5Yzyx-LM:&tbnh=36&tbnw=123&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dterminator%2Binline%2Bspinner%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26channel%3Ds%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3D9Ey%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1 Comes through weeds and timber easily, and the fish love it. Zilch Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Sure do. One of my favorite musky lures that works well on bass too when downsized. My personal favorite is the yellow with gold spinner. Just seems to work for me. Quote

CRFisher Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 They are extremely underrated. They always seem to catch something. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted January 27, 2010 Super User Posted January 27, 2010 I've always believed that French spinners (mepps) are overpriced, but there's no denying that they are fish-catchers (Musky favorite). If they're in your stash, they're already paid for...Go For It Roger Quote
Godfath3r Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 the bucktail spinners from mepps will catch you anything. i've caught sunfish, perch, smallmouth bass, rock bass, largemouth bass, and pike. Quote

Easy. 3/0 EWG hook, a split ring and a Mr. Twister grub. I just finished putting one a 1/2 oz. Rooster tail. It looks good. Quote
Ern Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Fished the Mepps for trout. Actually used them this past year for river smallies for the first time. Used the Single hook versions. Put a 3" grub on the back of a #1 or #2 Aglia. Caught fish all day and very few hangups. Thinking Some larger #3's are getting bought before spring. Quote
