Super User Wayne P. Posted August 17, 2012 Super User Posted August 17, 2012 Thanks to everyone for the excellent feedback. For the record, I have now been officially diagnosed with Sonar ***! Santa said I better be an awfully good boy if I expect an 1100 series (or equivalent) FF under the tree this year. I wonder if my HB 596 HD DI is capable of distinguishing such a feature. Thanks again all (especially Wayne for the screenshot)! Bill Yes it is and will do it better than the 1198c SI. The screen resolution of the 597ci HD DI is almost 4 times that of the 1198. Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 17, 2012 Super User Posted August 17, 2012 Your sonar unit can easily detect thermal breaks like a thermocline or spring. Colder water has higher density and the sonar signal will indicate the difference as darker color, if the sensitivity is adjusted manually. I am sure this topic is defined under sonar unit. I have been reading thermoclines and springs for over 30 years, your sonar will have no problem! Tom Quote
leadslinger Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 Good to hear about my FF being capable of seeing the springs. My first season with this unit and still messing with it. I see the thermocline fairly clearly in regular sonar mode (not DI mode), appearing as a speckled band about 10-15 feet thick at about 50 ft right now. I'll try looking at it in DI mode to see how it looks as well. I'll check this site for site for sonar adjustment discussion. Thx. Bill Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 17, 2012 Super User Posted August 17, 2012 The thermocline is usually only a few feet thick; 2-4 degrees within 1 to 5 feet in most reservoirs, unless mixed by current flow. Tom Quote
