I am looking for a good setup and hope you folks could help me out.

I fish mostly for bass from the shores of lakes and rivers in SW Pennsylvania. I am purchasing an angling kayak in the near future. I have used a lightweight spinning combo but find it lacking much of the time.

What I really would like to get is an all-purpose casting combo that will allow me to use cranks, topwaters, spinnerbaits, and soft-plastics. I know that there is no combo that does all these perfectly but with a limited budget ($250) I am sure there is something out there that will let me do all these things well but not top-notch. I prefer fishing shallow cranks and am learning how to fish soft-baits if this info helps.

Thank you so much for this great site!

For enthusiasts, technique specific gear is fun

to collect. However, three rigs cover all the

basics:

#1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some

soft plastics and spinnerbaits

#2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook

lures

#3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a

variety of techniques

Beat you to it Roadwarrior LOL...... Sorry, I just had to I could not resist.

I fish these same places in SW PA. My favorit stik is a 7' M-F Avid (St. croix with a Curado 201. This outfit can get you by with a lot of different baits. I wish the rod would be a 7'6" model. I like a stiffer medium because I can still throw a weightless stickworm as far as I care too or a 3/16 spinnerbait. The MH-F is a good option too but it will cut you short and be harder to throw the light baits. If you throw more 3/4 spinnerbaits than 3/16 spinnerbaits get the MH. But for SW PA I lean more to the smaller baits. Hope this helps. Although I prefer the Curado I have a Citica that I am just as happy with and will allow you to save a few bucs.
