Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 26, 2012 Super User Posted July 26, 2012 Do you have a toothbrush? If you do, which tooth do you brush with it? If you brush them all, shouldn't it be called a teethbrush? Is your thumb a finger? If you answered yes, then why do you only have four fingernails and one thumbnail on each hand? We have a little finger, a ring finger, a middle finger, an index finger, and a ..................................thumb. Why is the middle finger so called? It ain't in the middle of the four fingers. It's only one of two middle fingers. It's odd, but you'd need an odd number of fingers for it to be in the middle. Quote

My family has roots in West Virginia, so I don't see the problem with calling it a "toothbrush". And, the middle finger is in the middle of the ring finger and the little finger (aka pinky finger). And, the middle finger is in the middle of the ring finger and the little finger (aka pinky finger). Now see, you've proved my point. The "ring finger" is in the middle of the middle finger and the little finger, therefore the middle finger cannot be the middle finger. And who named the little finger the pinky finger. It's the same color as my thumbs and the six other non-pinky fingers. Quote

Sorry, I meant that the middle finger is in the middle of the ring finger and the index finger. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 26, 2012 Author Super User Posted July 26, 2012 Oops, that wasn't an English problem, that was an idiot problem. Sorry, I meant that the middle finger is in the middle of the ring finger and the index finger. But it's still a problem. The so-called ring finger is in the middle of the middle finger and the pinky finger, which makes the so-called middle finger an outer finger. The middle is the center, and in the middle of the four fingers is a gap. The middle finger and ring finger are mirror images of each other, positionally speaking, since each has two fingers on one side and one on the other. If you consider the thumb as a finger, then the middle finger really is the middle finger. The problem is the thumb or big finger. See the problem? We have a big toe, but I've never heard the thumb called the big finger, except by me in the prior sentence. I can understand the little finger being so named. It's the smallest. The ring finger has traditionally been where we wear a ring. Even the confusing middle finger I can somewhat understand. But the index finger? I'd love to hear the rationale. The index of a book tells you about its contents. A drill index is used for measuring drills and determining their size. I cannot figure which applies to the index finger. Quote
Super User Marty Posted July 26, 2012 Super User Posted July 26, 2012 And who named the little finger the pinky finger. Well, if you want to trust Wikipedia, it comes from the Dutch word pink, which means "little finger." Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted July 27, 2012 Super User Posted July 27, 2012 Finger.... When you start to analyze that word, and say it alot, its sounds kinda weird, haha. Finger, lol Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted July 27, 2012 Super User Posted July 27, 2012 For any of you that remember the 1960's show - "Laugh In" the finger located between the index and ring fingers should always be called the Fickle Finger. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted July 27, 2012 Super User Posted July 27, 2012 Isn't it weird how the word "weird" doesn't follow I before E, except after C? Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 27, 2012 Super User Posted July 27, 2012 BASSclary, you can call them phalanges. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 27, 2012 Super User Posted July 27, 2012 "i before e except after c" should be extended to include "except when said 'ay' as in 'neighbor' and 'weigh'". The middle finger is in located approximately in the middle if your hand and aligns with the middle of your arm. Quote
