I know the xrap has a wilder, more erratic, cutting action than the more subtle husky jerk. So which of these suspenders produces better for bass in the spring in your opinion?

I use both with good success, but I seem to catch more on the X-Rap. I think the X-Rap is a little more versatile.

9 times outta 10 I start off with a Husky Jerk (or an LC pointer) just to get a feel of what the fish are into.  I f I think the fish are in a more aggressive mood  I'll tie on an X-rap.  Both lures, in my opinion, get the job done but theres something about an X-rap that really ticks off a bass.  I've never had a bass slap at an x-rap like they will a husky jerk.  When a bass goes after an x-rap, theyre simply trying to annihilate that lure.

These are significantly different lures. I would agree that the X-Rap is the better choice for active fish, but larger fish (generally) seem to prefer the Husky Jerk.

I love the xrap its just every time i use it i catch more sauger than bass! lol but thats just the body of water i use it on the most. Ive also caught alot of blue gill on it as well.

BassCatcher-

What size x-rap do you use. I normally use the #10 but have ordered several  #8 size for my upcoming trip to Table Rock in Missouri? Just wondering what size Blugill will hit?

I am a bigger fan of the Husky Jerk.  I like the X-Rap and it casts better but like RW said, the Husky Jerk gets the bigger bites.

BassChaser-

I am using the smaller one the size 8. I was catching good frying pan size blue gill on it. I know the first time i pulled a bluegill up on the xrap i couldnt believe it. But they were absolutly hammering this thing. What ever the xrap has that ticks off bass, it must tick off the blue gill just as bad.

Just a note here; If you go to the Rapala site they have a small video clip of each of their lures factory built in actions. This also helps when you experiment and try to find your own action by changing speed of retrieve, going to stop and go and even altering the bait itself so it is your own unique approach These clips have helped me a lot.

Hey Timmy Just go to rapala.com and click on lures , then click on freh water , then click the picture of any lure when that page opens you will see LOADING and a clip for each lure plays I hope that helps you.

thanks muddy, that really does help...haha now i know why i havent been so "lucky" with my husky jerks, oh and the video helps but the directions on how to fish it helps a lot too.

but back to the question, the following answer is NOT from personal experience, rather from a few articles i have read:

when bass are in the transitional period, which is when the water temp is around 52 degrees, the husky jerk's slow, more subtle action, and suspension work best, it gives lathargic bass a little more time and encouragement. the x-rap seems to work better when the water temp warms up.

You already answered my question RW. Aren't they two different types of baits? I always thought the X was a slash bait. I know one thing, the Rapala Husky Jerk  in no. 8 in low water and in no. 10 as well as the deep diver Husky Jerk in Tennessee Shad are smallmouth magnets here.

Rapala markets the X-Rap as a "slash" bait, but I don't know whether that should be considered a new category. Most lures in any class of baits have some different action, I think that's how I would describe the distinction between the X-rap and other jerkbaits.

Both the Husky Jerk and X-Rap have been very productive lures for me.
