Just came back from a small pond around my house. I came across these areas and wondered if they were worth fishing and if so, what type of bait/lure would be best. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First two pictures, the water depth is between 1-3 feet.

Frog the top of that stuff and flip a bait into those holes, big or small. As long as that vegetation is alive it will be providing oxygen and fish will be hiding in it.

I would try some top water, your choice really over and around the whole area. I would also try swimming a jig/spinner bait over the tops and deep as you can go without getting to snagged up.

Work the edges of the grass, where it becomes open water again, maybe with a t-rigged worm/creature.

I would put on a 1 to 1.5 ounce bullet weight along with a plastic bait and punch right into that stuff. Especially if the sun is out...they will bury themselves in that stuff.

Sometimes weeds CAN be too think. When you punch the grass and get through that top layer, you should feel it go smoothly to the bottom. That means there is some room underneath the mat and thats what I find the fish hold to the best. If you punch it in and it keeps hitting grass while it's falling...I usually find that it doesn't hold fish. It's hard to explain...easier to feel by trial and error.

The fish love the grass, but the trick is finding the "right grass". I think that's where people get frustrated..just because there is grass..doesn't always mean there is fish in it.

Looks like a place I fish often. Here is a bait that is killer

H2O Xpressâ„¢ SCSFW Wake Bait - Chartreuse Shad

Throw it out a reel it in. When there top water bite is on these are deadly

it is possible that it can get to thick, but if the bass can get in it you'd be amazed at just how shallow they may be.

That looks exactly like one of the lakes I started fishing this year. Try the other suggestions, but this is what I do apart from frogs on top. I chuck a weedless hudd (ROF5 works better) as far as I can, let it sink, and then jig/ swim it back. I'm using 80 lb straight braid for this. Unless there's slimy algae, I don't usually have too much trouble. If and when the bait digs into the vegetation, I try to work it out. If that doesn't work, I rip it free. That weedless hudd comes back through everything without picking up much trash. A weedless hudd is NOT too big for a 1-2 pounder to eat.

I'd use a topwater such as spro frogs. If i were you, I throw a money minnow by YUMX3 or weedless jig with a trailer.

That is a BEAUTIFUL pond!

I bet there are some big ladies under and around that grass.

As the guys said, topwaters across the grass and plastics to fall into the holes and over the grass. And don't forget your Cavitrons and wake baits.

I bet a pink or white weightless trick worm on 8 pound mono on a spinning rig could produce some good results, too.

Fish across the grass and as stated above, let the bait fall into the holes. You can try Wacky Rigged plastics either weightless or with a small amount of weight.

My friend had a pond like this before his parents sold the farm and he used live bluegills and caught some very large ladies. In fact, he outfished me 5 to 1 with me throwing Senkos.

Give it a try and please let us know what happens.

I would kill to take a baby bass or green pumpkin flake colored 5" wacky rigged senko and drop it in one of those holes. That 3rd picture looks like a glory hole to end all glory holes!

My guess is it doesnt get fished all that much.

I would try a weedless frog on the surface and some weighted plastics in the vegetation. Try some wacky rigged senko's and jigs in the holes.

If you dont want to fish it i will !!! I would start with a quiet mouse or frog weedless if need be on the top with the longest casts possible trying to make sure i covered as much area as possible . and i would twitch it real slow. Then i would try in a different area to make a little noise with a popping frog or rebel popr again longest casts possible. hopefully youll find fish with both ways. i would then try dropping a rage tail weightless craw on the edge of the holes as quiet as possible. I would do my best to have the sun in front of me so you are not shadowing over the hole. Then i would try a rage tail keel weighted craw in the hole right in the middle and just twitch it around. That H2O express looks good too. Either way , i would fish it with out hesitation. hopefully you catch big fish !!!

All great answers. Being summer I'd defi.itely punch with a.heavy tungsten braided line.

As suggested swimbaits, frogs, punch rigs, senkos ect... will all work. Look for points formed by the weeds. Also the fish will still relate to structure.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I plan on going back soon. That area of the pond doesn't get pressured that much. To get there, you need a boat that go over a section of the pond in which the depth is 1 foot. My pontoon seems to do the trick. Looking forward to going back and posting some results!

Thanks again!

if none of that works bring beer , sandwichs and sun tan lotion.

That water looks like 75% of the water I fish. Yes it is definitely worth fishing, if it is at least 3-4 feet deep, My plan of attack at this time of year would be to hit it with topwater baits early. As the sun climbs start dropping jigs, worms, wacky rigged stick baits etc. down in the holes and pockets in the weeds. If there is open space under the tops, and it really doesn't appear so in the pictures but it is hard to tell, punching some craw type plastics with a BIG weight would could draw some of the biggest fish once the sun is more directly over head. Those big girls like to hide out in the shade. Lastly, if there is a deep edge to the weeds, it needs to be worked thoroughly, especially if it is at least 8-10 feet deep. In most of the natural lakes around here this is where the biggest fish hang out in the summer, Cooler water temps and perfect prey ambush locations. Look for any irregularities in the edge, pockets, points, areas where the weeds go from thick to sparse. Cranks, jigs, T-rigged and wacky rigged plastics are good bets in that situation.

Questions to folks suggested punching, is there any way to tell if there's space under those mats based on the kind of vegetation? Don't certain kind of the grass goes up to the surface quick then spread horizontally leaving the space underneath, while other kind just keep growing from the bottom like bushes without much space under them?

What you're gonna need is some flukes. You're gonna wanna rig these bad boys up weightless, and tickle the tops of the grass with this. When you get to a hole, let it sink. deadstick it in that hole, and then proceed to tickle the grass tops with it on the way back. Then repeat.

Are they WORTH fishing? Depends on the price :respect-059: .

Excuse my candidness, but why ask such a silly question? Why don't you do a little exploring and just fish the pond. I mean really, you took the time to take pictures and post your question "Is this worth fishing?" when all the time you could have been fishing it and ansewered your own question.

If several people would have said NO, while some said YES, then that would have negatively messed with your confidence. Unless your day is so consumed with SO MANY tasks that you just have ZERO time to try it out for your own, then approach the pond with a positive attitude and be excited about hooking into a MONSTER and you'll soon find out on your own if the lake was WORTH fishing. :Idontknow:

Based on his question reguarding punching, I don't think he has alot of experience fishing weeds like this. When I first started bass fishing my experiece was primarily salt water and trout fishing, I would have passed water like this over. I had no idea what to look for or how to go about it fishing in the weeds.

You can pretty much go to the bank that there is open water underneath. It's pretty easy to tell, once the bait breaks through the mat you will feel the bait free fall. You could start by one of the holes in the weeds. Drop your punch rig in the hole and you can get a good idea of the depth. Then punch it through the weeds next to the hole that way you will know what it feels like to get it through the mat.

There are a ton of baits you can throw in those weeds don't limit yourself. Break down the water column into thirds, top, middle and bottom. Work all three until you get bit. There are some suggestions to abandon top water after early morning. Don't be afraid to throw a frog or a buzz bait with the sun high over head. Many times you won't get a ton of bites but some of the best quality fish are caught this way in the summer.

Sorry it wasn't clear, but my question was about the association between the type of weed and the way they grow. Not about the way to find out.

For me if I see a water pictured in OPs post, I would have thrown unweighted or rightly weighted worm or swimbaits, adjusting the weight based on how much water I see above the weeds.

SOME AWESOME INFO . i have taken notes !!! I would also add that i would try anything in my box. At night a nice big 1/2 inch black jitterbug if there are spots that are open with no weds on the surface. Also a big loud zara spook with the nocker pellets inside. Sometimes i feel the big girls wont touch a little snack but they will suck down a nice meal. Also a buzz bait whipped across the top might bring you something to write about. Basically i throw what i know and i experiment if that stuff doesnt get me anything. Some times i still end up skunked, but i always have fun.

Also someone said punching thru , like a heavy jig? ---- please explain :) i want to know --- rigged weedless with maybe a rage tail craw on the back end? and just drop it thru hoping its heavy enough to get thru the weeds to the bottom? I use 30 lb braid with a 25 lb mono leader and a med rod. I fish a lot of top water mice and frogs in heavy weeds. No stretch from the braid , the mono invisable and if i do manage to break the line it is usually the leader and i dont lose 15 bucks worth of line as well as a 5 - 8$ plug on the end

Thank you for some awesome info
