Sorry if this subject has already been covered, but how well do Fat Ikas work for largemouth? I enjoy, and have success, fishing stick bait style baits. Would the Ikas be a good addition to my arsenal?

Thanks TNbassfisher. I actually just read that great article earlier today, but was just unsure if Ikas are mainly effective on smallmouth.

No.

I caught the "Big Bass" on the RoadTrip at Guntersville this year on a Fat Ika.

7 lbs- 7 oz

Love that Fat Ikas, and have had great success on the Damiki Hydra as well; it's become my go to plastic.

That's a hog roadwarrior! The hydras and palm trees look great as well guys. Thanks for the suggestions. Based on your report, quakenshake, these things really do catch numbers!

Do you guys typically Tex-pose these with the frilly end up towards the hook eye, or down towards the bend? To put it another way, do you insert the hook into the frill end or the pointy end?

I'm assuming you'd always want the frills towards trailing the direction of retrieve since it could look like both a baitfish or a craw that way.

Yeah that and apparently smallmouth to boot.

Yes

Is this clear enough for you to see? the eye is at the skirt end

Nice thanks for the pic quakenshake. Is that a 5 EWG? I've never even seen a smallmouth around here!

After reading the article by RW I got a bunch of the Fat Ikas and learned to fish them and they are my GO too plastic lure when nothing else seems to work. Maybe its my confidence in them but they are the first plastic lure I reach for when I'm out and keep one on a rod. I usually rig them up backwards like in the pic with a worm rattle inserted inside them on a 5/0 EWG hook. I tried them with a 4/0 EWG hook but kept getting missed hook ups with them. They have produced my largest tourney fish to date of 3.23lbs and I've also fished them on a weighted swimbait hook and had they produce as well.

I never thought of adding a rattle Chicity basser. Do you use this in murky water, or for all presentations. I just got my first pack today and tested them in the pool. Ridiculous action!!

I use it for all presentations and started using it in the one clear lake I fish with the ika falling into the grass and really worked well and now I add one most times I use it.

Yes

Yes, that is perfectly clear. It is just completely backwards from what I would've expected. Like I said, I thought they'd point the other way to mimic a minnow or craw on retrieve.

Learn something new every day. :-). Thanks for the post.

Any thoughts re fishing these weightless, sliding weight or pegged? I predominately fish Texas riggged senkos, and until now I have always had the worm weight able to move on the line. I want to experiment with fishing them weightless or with the weight pegged.

I use 5/0 EWG as well. Ive been looking for wder gap though not longer for use with IKA and Damiki Hydra.

I see OWNER has a Wide Gap Plus size hook might anybody have used these like a EEWG?

The hydra is a bit fatter but not as long, 5/0 is right at the tip but 4/0 not much gap left. Like ChiCity Basser mentioned might cause missed strike with the small gap.

I think a wider gap would help with baits lasting longer as now the bait dosent have room to move out of way so something has to give and its the bait, just tears or as seen in a few of my pics the bait runs up the line. That puzzels me a bit how that happens

Fish them weightless. I fished them weightless in 20+' and hammered the smallies. A weight kills the shimmy/drift of the Ika. Not saying you can't, I just haven't found a reason to use them.

I fish them weightless the majority of the time as well and if I do fish them weighted I have used a 1/16 oz weighted swimbait 5/0 EWG at times. I've had more success though with them weightless and rigged backwards. The worm rattle helps in dingy to stained water and even muddy water with the tentacles dipped in JJ's magic.

Good Luck

I can't thank everyone enough for the advice! I'm definitely ahead of the game and I haven't even used them yet. The rattle seems like a great idea, especially since there's no clear Water within 100 miles of me!

Fat Ika is the best tip I've received from this forum. It has produced countless numbers of bass for me in the last few years. For me, I prefer a 4/0 ewg. The 5/0 seems to rip up the end of the ika faster. The green pumkin/ black flake works well for us in clearer water. Very hard to find in these parts. Most of the time we have to order them in.

Here is my favorite hook for the Fat Ika: Owner Twistlock 3X with the centering pin.

For real deep water or a windy day I shove a small tungsten nail weight thru the nose. You should see that thing glide away from you with that rig!

I am grateful for the responses, too... By a happy accident, we were in a DSG that had 4" Ikas in Black/Blue Flake and Watermelon something or other. Picked up both bags.

Looking forward to giving these a try while we are here on the lake.
