QUIENYO Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I was looking at some used G-Loomis sticks and the seller made mention that all G-Loomis rods are unconditionally guaranteed and backed with a free replacement, no matter who turns them in. This sounded a bit fishy, so I checked the G-Loomis web page and lo and behold, the warranty is only good for the original owner/purchaser. Makes sense to me, but has G-Loomis ever carried this type of open ended guarantee on older products? I seem to recall Shimano having the same sort of issue. At one time they offered unconditional guarantees for some of their rods, but have since changed things to reflect the original owner. Anyone have a definitive answer on this? I am trying to decide if I should make an offer or call BS on the used sticks. Thanks Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 22, 2012 Super User Posted July 22, 2012 How do you prove "original ownership?" I'm not encouraging you to lie about being the original owner but how will Loomis know. I believe, and I may be wrong, but that may apply to only warranty work. The expeditor service is $100 no questions asked (excluding NRX series). This service is NOT a warranty service. Quote

Would you not have to send a copy of the original receipt? I would imagine if you did not purchase the rod originally, you will not have the receipt. Quote
Quillback Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I gave up trying to keep up with the Loomis warranty changes. Or should we say Shimano. If one of my ShimLoomis rods breaks I'll deal with it when it happens. By the time you read this, they'll probably have another change in their warranty policy. Quote

I've paid a lot of attention to this subject since I have a bunch of Loomis rods. As Quillback says, there has been constant changes to the warranty and service programs the last year or two. You have to seperate the things they offer into 2 buckets, Warranty and Service. The warranty is lifetime on all Loomis rods. It used to be free, but they recently added a $20 "surcharge" to it. Along with the cost of shipping. That is on discontinued rods and current rods. Service is something else entirely. Until the NRX's showed up, it was all about the Xpeditor. And it was always $50, no questions asked ($65 if you wanted 2nd day shipping). That price as gone up to $100 now with no 2nd day option, but ShimLoomis is working towards ending that service altogether. They're doing that by not offering Xpeditor on the new rods like the GL2's and newest GLX's. And they are calling the older models (full cork grips) "discontinued". So those will have no service program at all. Not grandfathered in, nothing. They are replacing that with the Wildcard. You apply for the Wildcard when you buy the rod, and they send you card. It's a free replacement, but for sure only one time. Xpeditor says one time only now too (another recent change), but it's impossible for them to track that. A guy could have any number of a given rod, and there's no registration process. It's nice it's a free replacement, but it sucks it's only once given G. Loomis's long time, pre-Shimano Xpeditor service. As to the original owner thing on the warranty service, even my 2009 printed Loomis catalog says that. But that has traditionally not been enforced that I'm aware of. And I don't see how they can do that as there is no registration requirement and you for sure do not have to provide proof of purchase for the warranty part. But that is what it says. Quote

I would imagine if you did not purchase the rod originally, you will not have the receipt. No. And the receipt doesnt show proof. You also cannot tell one GLX or IMX rod from the next. meaning no serial numbers or markings. I have a couple Loomis rods from the 80's and no receipt. I can still use the expeditor service and get a "comparible" rod as replacement, I think. I know I could 2 yrs ago but who knows now with all the changes. Your best bet would be to call ShimanoLoomis and ask them. Quote
