Fishing In The Rain?

Today me and my buddy went to our local quarry lake where weve been having great success this year. After this whole week of 100 degree days we figured since today was supposed to rain and only be in the 70's it would be a good day. We got there and it was drizzling all day long. Water was clear and about 75 degrees or so. Overcast obviously. We couldnt buy a bite. We threw, texas rigged plastic worms and creatures, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, deep, medium and shallow cranks, lipless cranks, literally everything in my tackle bag was thrown and not a single bite. We even tried different worms, paddle tails, ribbon tails, Senkos and even the old Creme nightcrawler with the hooks already in it. It was depressing. 7 hours and not a bite. The lake isnt big and we walked around all 4 sides. This quarry lake is very deep, the bank goes out maybe 6-7 feet then just drops off into darkness. There is tons and tons of shoreline coves, fallen logs and trees, old wooden pallets, and some big boulders. Anything I could have done differently? What would you have thrown? Is a day like today where its 70 degrees and rainy after a week of heat just not a good day to fish? The cold front with the storm hadnt passed over us yet so i figured it was pre front and theyd be biting. I was dead wrong. We worked the water column top to bottom and shallow to deep. Any advice?

In that situation I would either go deep and slloooww with a jig or plastic-t or c-rigged, or shallow and vewy quiet pitching a jig or t-rigged beaver. A wacky rigged Senko/knock-off would also be on my short list. Some times the fish just don't act like they should though. It sounds like you gave it a good try. There is always next time...good luck.

Despite the cooler day and drizzle it probably didn't cool your water off very much. I'm guessing your water temps are close to the same as ours (mid to upper 80's) which are not idea water temps at all. I probably would have fished slow and deep if you had some good drop offs. Sometimes you just aren't going to catch them no matter what you do. It makes it extra frustrating when the weather cooperates but the fish don't for sure.

Also, I'm starting to learn that even though weather seems to be cooperative, the bass go through a readjusting period. Now if it stayed that way a couple of days then the bass might start behaving the way you think they would. I had that problem a couple of weeks ago. Temp was low to mid 70's, overcast skies, and winds were 4-6mph, but it was like they were clamped down tighter than when it was very hot and sunny. After a few days they started biting better until the barometric pressure started going up and down all crazy. We're still having rain, storms, and some nice weather compared to the triple digits, but I haven't been able to get back out yet. Maybe today depending on how I feel.

My son and I fished last Saturday, 7/14, in weather just like you described. Best day we have had in 2 yrs. I mean it rained so much I got wet through my $225.00 rain gear. We caught bass 2# to 4# all day long. Never done that before.

Go figure, I sure cant.
