GoneFishi'n Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I was wondering if i should get the brush hog or baby brush hog. The water i am fishing in is kind of stained i guess. The deepest part of the lake is about 12.7 foot. I was wondering if I should use the greenpumkin or some other color for stained water. And what type of weight should I use? Also, I got 3 free trokar hook packs and one is 4/0 EWG worm hooks, and the other two are 2/0 EWG worm hooks which one should I use? I have different types of hooks to, so just tell me which one works well for texas rigging them. Thank you and have a good night. Quote
GoneFishi'n Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 Also there is no lilly pads or stuff like that but there is alot of vegitation and downed trees so will they be good for that? Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 19, 2012 Super User Posted July 19, 2012 The real difference between a baby and a full size hog is the size, the full size is quite a large piece of plastic, doen´t mean smaller fish won´t bite it but it also means that most fish that will bite the bait won´t be large enough for them to mouth it, to tell you the truth, I seldomly tie a full size hog, babies are much more bite size for less than 4 pounders and you´ll catch a lot more fish using the smaller sizer. As for the hooks, 4/0 is fine for the baby, for the full size you´ll do better with 5/0 or larger. Quote
backwater4 Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 X2 on the baby hog. For pitching into weeds, add a glass rattle, a 1/2-3/4 tungsten bullet weight and peg with a toothpick or bobber stop and your all set. Green Pumpkin is the way to go. Quote
A-Rob Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I would stick with the original brush hog unless the cover gets so thick that the size and legs gets held up on vegetation/cane/pads. I'd throw the brush hog on my worm rod like I would an 8-10" worm. I'd throw the baby brush hog as a creature bait on my flippin stick in heavier vegetation. in stained water you could do an okeechobee craw, junebug, bama bug, red shad, even green pumpkin Quote
GoneFishi'n Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 So are they good for twitching like a texas rig? Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 19, 2012 Super User Posted July 19, 2012 I use a 1/8 oz. parasite weight and a 1/0 EWG with the Baby. The baby is better IMO unless you are going for less bites but perhaps more appeal to a big fish. In heavily stained water the full size is better. Quote
GoneFishi'n Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 I'm just going for bass around the 3 pound range. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I always throw the baby when pitching/flipping. Both small and large bass love it. Quote
bayouXpress Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 baby brush hog 1/4oz tungsten bullet weight, no peg, watermelon seed red, 30lb power pro braid, 4/0 EWG if I had one bait this would be it. If it gets real stained to a little dirty switch to junebug The only time I peg the weight is during the spawn when in my area they are in the roots of the cut grass and you have to land your flip in a quarter size hole. wakeeater Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 baby brush hog & baby super brush hog = the best soft bait around god bless zoom! Quote
bassin is addicting Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 i'd recommend the baby....with as little weight as possible...start with 1/8oz....it doesn't have to be a "tungsten" weight....if you are fishing from the bank you WILL get hungup and losing tungsten weights can be very costly... i think a 3/0 or 4/0 hook is plenty. i like green pumpkin magic and in stained water junebug would be a good choice too. good luck. GoneFishi'n Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 Thanks for all of the posts. I will be going to Bass Pro tomorrow and get some. I have also heard of these things called Fat Ikas. How would I fish them? Sorry for asking another question, I just thought it would be better to just ask here then to do another post. Sorry if this is asked alot. Quote
Primus Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 They are not real expensive I'd get a few of both. The baby attracts all types of bass while the full size usually gets me bites from 3 lb plus bass and is one of the best soft plastics for big bass. I especially like the full size under low light conditions or when fishing stained water. Quote
canyouheminow Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 definatly the baby brush hogs. on a 3/0 EWG hook. Quote
brushhoggin Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 I always throw the baby when pitching/flipping. Both small and large bass love it. my name is brushhoggin and i approve this message 3 Quote
Jake P Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Baby brush hog hands down. I have never gotten bit ONCE on the regular size. To me they are just a lump of plastic. Not trying to get off topic BUT, the Rge hawgs are money if your wanting a larger size. They shine for me when im fishing muddy/murky water. Most of the time though im using a baby hog in GP. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted July 20, 2012 Super User Posted July 20, 2012 Baby is good for T-rigging, the full size is a great jig trailer. Quote
MNBASSIN Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Baby Brush Hogs are killer T Rigged or with just a jighead -pumpkinseed or junebug Quote
