What lure should I punch through the mat with when I know there are bluegill suspended in it? I'm talking decent sized bluegill, they kind of look grey with chartreuse tails to me when I'm looking at them in the water.

Start with something decent sized that is kind of grey with a chartreuse tail. Perhaps one of those awesome looking new Shellcrackers that Rage Tail has come out with.

Going back and rereading your post. I can't decide if you are asking for the best thing to imitate or catch the bluegill. In the event you were asking about catching bluegill (in the bass fishing forum btw), I have no idea. I have never heard of anyone punching for BG. Try something small and weedless in any open spots in the mat. They usually are not shy about what they eat.

I don't think he wants to punch for bluegill. I would use a regular punch rig just match the color best you can. Based on what you described I would use a color like grass cutter or tax man from paycheck baits. As far as the plastic, something like a pit boss or a beaver that has some bulk to it.

You want to punch for bluegills do ya?

You're gonna want an UL rod, some 1/32 oz tungsten bullet weights, some mini skirts, and a itty bitty grub. Go with the smallest hooks you can find. I also recommend 2# line to get it through the weight and hook eye. PItch it out there, let it sink, then just barely move the rod tip. Repeat until you catch some sandwhich size fish.

meh, put the lures away and grab some crickets or a box of good old fashioned nightcrawlers...

if you insist on a lure, i would buy a rebel tad fry and throw it to the open pockets in the algae, they will come up and get it...

I think I worded it wrong, lol. I want to punch for bass in mats that have Bluegill suspended in the mat.

How do you rig the crickets, are they live or the ones in a can? Also my son picked up some plastic crickets from big bite baits. how would you recommend to rig them? I have been running a hook inside it but just curious if I need to go to that pains or if I could just hook it like behind the head or something.

Then do what smr913 said in post #2. the shell cracker looks good for exactly that. Or one of the Lateral perch from power tackle might work for what you want. Also the Berkley Havoc devil spears.

I use a fly to catch those big ones. The biggest one I've caught was on a fly and it was 8.3 inches.

A buddy uses hand tied ants or deer fur poppers to gets some nice ones. The ants work awesome.

I use the popper as a strike indicator and tie a 12" dropper to the bend of the popper's hook and on the other end tie a small wet fly. Works well and you double up a lot.

ive only used live crickets, i just hook them threw the body with a abeerdeen hook under a bobber with a split shot down the line, the bluegill are going to eat them regardless if alive or dead, so the ones in the can are probably fine too. the only fake crickets i ever used were rebel crickhoppers, and theyre more like grasshoppers actually. i catch bluegill and bass on the crickhopper. but i really like the rebel tad fry for bluegill too...

I have used my dads hand tied ants from my uncle. Those thing are deadly but fall apart after 9 or 10 big ones.

theyre really light, youll want to throw them in a light weight setup with small line or they wont cast anywhere lol. it floats on top the water and dives a little bit when you retrieve it. fishing off a dock with a down tree in the water by it, i just kept casting over the tree and the bluegill would come up and crush it...

Cool the setups will be pretty light, for my kids rods. Sounds perfect. Looked today while was out but didn't see it. Gonna have to order some stuff soon so I may add it to that. Thanks for the info
