Super User BASSclary Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 I'm really looking for a finesse casting rod for weightless trick worms, and very small, light, topwaters. Upper end in weight being 3/16 ounce. Powell doesn't have any ML casting rods so I guess I'll have to look somewhere else :/ Anyways, I think i'm looking for a ML/XF casting rod, thats around the 125-150 range. Pickin' is a little slim haha. Thanks Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 I just use my 7' avid M (8lb line), sometimes the MH when I want to feel unorthodox Quote
KingMidas Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I like the St. Croix premier for that application. Heck, any model from St. Croix will be nice for what I think you want. I don't own one, but a buddy of mine raves about the Element 21 Carrot Stix Wild Black rod that he has and from my limited use of it, I would agree that its a pretty sweet rod. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 I have an Avid AVC69MLXF - nice rod and rated XF...but I personally don't feel much of the "XF" in that ML rod. You can see the XF taper in the blank when you flex the rod, but it doesn't translate into much. Upper lure weight rating on this rod is 1/2 oz. Avids are a bit above your price range unless you find them used. There's an ML in the Premier range, the PC70MLF, I have one of those as well but it almost fishes like some other companies "M" and has an upper lure weight rating of 5/8 oz. For baits as light as 3/16 oz (if your reel will toss those), you could also check out the Phenix Recon PHX-C682L and PHX-C712L - 6'8" and 7'1" - $159/$169. Both rated as "L" power and fast action with an upper lure weight rating of 3/8 oz. I have the 682 - nice rod. These rods would probably toss your 3/16 oz weights better than the Avid but don't have the XF taper. Both above your price range again though! Like you said, pickings might be pretty slim for your specifications, including the price ceiling.... Quote
Highhawk1948 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I do a lot of finess fishing and I use several, both bait casting and spinning. But the important thing for me is that they are light weight and Medium Action with a fast tip. Works great for weightless worms,Charlie Brewer's slider system, dropshot, etc. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 My FAVORITE finesse rod was built on a MHX HM 7'MEF blank with micros on it. It will be over budget but I'd look at having DVT build you one. Quote
KSRonH Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 http://www.stcroixro...LXF-327-23.html Just a slight bit above your price range at $161 but I think it's what you are looking for. St Croix Ledgend Tournament Bass 6'9'' MLXF, available in St Croix's close out bargain room. Good Luck! 1 Quote
BradH Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I bit the bullet and bought a TFO Tactical 7'3" ML. I had enough Cabela's points it was basically free. I like it , it's just too much of a niche rod for me and I hardly ever dig it out. Quote

St Croix Ledgend Tournament Bass 6'9'' MLXF, available in St Croix's close out bargain room. Good Luck! This is the one you want. I have one, an older full grip model, and it is the ultimate finesse baitcaster. Mine has an Alphas mounted with #6 YoZuri. This is the rig I pick up when most would choose a spinning combo. At the bargain room price, you can't go wrong. 1 Quote
0119 Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Ive played alot with ultralight baitcasting. Throwing 1/8 to 1/4oz jerkbaits at baby tarpon. I cant imagine that a ST. Croix would fit your needs since they always over power all their rods compared to how they rate them. I use crankbait specific Crucials for their soft castable tip, but they still are graphite so their second half is less moderate. Loomis Kokonee casting rods are a blast and will throw a tiny lure a mile. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 17, 2012 Super User Posted July 17, 2012 I just use my 7' avid M (8lb line), sometimes the MH when I want to feel unorthodox I've seen Tom throw a 1/8 oz. lure on his MH Premier. You don't want to be too close or you may get sucked into the wind tunnel. :) Quote
baluga Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 You are going to love the Cumara reaction CUC63M, it's your best bet. It's on sale at Tackle Whorehouse for $139.99. You don't want to miss this sale. I love the CUC63H with Calcutta 50XT for Sammy 100, Gunfish 115, Spooks and POP Max. It's light and good balance. The CUC63M is even lighter Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 17, 2012 Super User Posted July 17, 2012 I've been looking for a spinning rod for panfish. One capable of handling very light lures. Preferably 7' or longer. What I have found (and I'm sure you have as well) is that most ML rods (spinning or baitcasting) start at 1/8 oz. and go up. Maybe this will work for you, but isn't what I want. My 'finesse' casting rod is a Falcon Expert Light. I believe the low end is 1/16 oz. This may be more along the lines of what you are looking for. Of course it is a 'used only' option. However, it would be in your price range. Originally a $279 rod that I got for less than half that including shipping. Another option is to get DVT to make a rod for you. I don't know if Fenwick sells blanks, but they have a 6'8" and 7'2" River Runner Spinning rod that is rated for 1/32-5/16 oz. lures and 4-8 lb. line. A rod built on this blank should be exactly what you want. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 17, 2012 Super User Posted July 17, 2012 6'10" M-F Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth, it isn't the extra fast action but it is rated for lure weights from 1/8oz to 5/8oz and from the feel of it I would classify it as a medium light as it has enough tip to throw a small bait. I think in your price range that is going to be the best rod available, the St.Croix ML rods are basically mediums, and their mediums are more like medium heavy just like the Abu Garcia V series. And If I got a custom for that price, I think the blank wouldn't be so hot. Quote
Quarry Man Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 What about major craft or Daiwa Tatula ml rods? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 7, 2017 Super User Posted June 7, 2017 Wow. Thread is 5 years old. If the OP doesn't have a finesse casting rod by now he never will. BTW OP, what rod did you wind up with? Are you even around now? Quote
evilcatfish Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 3 hours ago, Quarry Man said: What about major craft or Daiwa Tatula ml rods? Major Craft makes nice rods. Their economy models like the Corzza offer a lot of bang for your buck in both the performance and style department. I havent fished the Tatula but I'd imagine it's a good rod as well Quote
earthworm77 Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 I agree, try to find a Volkey 6-9 ULXF or L Quote
