jerzeeD Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 So I am in the market for a 6'6" M/F St croix Avid. I notice aa guy selling one in Vietnam new and the current bid is 46 bucks. Problem is he is a new seller with 0 feedback. Part of my instinct is screaming "scam" here. Any advice you guys would like to give me or nightmare stories to share? It is awful tempting to bid on it! Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 What is the shipping information? Does he take PayPal? How much is shipping? Sometimes shipping is ridiculously high, and people dont notice. Im not sure there is too much bass in vietnam, (Or a market for St.Croix for that matter) but you never know. Ask him why he's selling it. In the end, go with your gut feeling. If he was located in the US I would say go for it because if you get scammed PayPal and eBay will take care of you, but i'm not so sure of their power outside of the US. Quote
bassh8er Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Just bought a Veritas on eBay today... Brand new for $80. this guy has his own shop and had severAl items for sale, with lots of feedback and free shipping. I've never had a bad eBay experience, but I'd stay away from this guy. Quote
j.bruno Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Yea i personally stay away from people with 0 feed back on ebay. Quote
Quillback Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 No way I'd buy from an overseas seller with zero feedback. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 Check and see if Paypal will cover the money if you get shafted. If they do and he is a verified seller, you will get your money back. Make sure to check the shipping. It may end up costing 50-100 to ship Quote
B@ssCrzy Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 No way would I do this!! With zero feedback you are probably going to get suckered. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 Why would you buy a rod that is made in the USA from Vietnam? All sorts of alarm bells should be going off... 1 Quote
northern basser Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 No way I'd buy from an overseas seller with zero feedback. Agreed. Normally, either one of the two would be enough to shy away. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 Ebay has buyer protection, if you get stiffed, or a broken rod, or the wrong rod, you are guaranteed your money back. I prefer to buy things off of ebay closer to home, but sometimes these sellers in Korea and other Asian countries have some cheap deals. I say go for it, your money will be covered in the event of a scam. I have bought and sold thousands of things on ebay, and have never lost money, I have been scammed and have had sellers not ship the stuff, but have always been refunded by Ebay. 1 Quote
jerzeeD Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 I know the paypal protection is great.... and shipping is free. Buy i am skipping it. If they send me a knockoff or wrong rod, I have to return it to the seller to get a refund. That may end up costing me too much to be worth the refund. I hope whoever wins this auction doesn' t get screwed! Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 Even if the seller says the buyer pays for the return, thats not how it works. I have never paid to return a wrong item, and why should I, its not my fault. Ebay takes care of any of those issues for you, but some sellers like to put rules like that in so naive buyers will pay. jerzeeD Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 LOL.... I have actually bought a St. Croix legend tourney with a Pflueger patriarch, a Premier with a Pflueger Supreme,a St Croix triumph with a trion ( ultra light setup that only gets used a few times a year brook trout fishing), and a Pflueger medalist reel that will eventually be used on the Avid this year. I have a newborn son now , so trying to save a few bucks on gear at this point seems to be a good idea! Quote

tracker01 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 If you have to ask if it's a good idea, it's probably not. Quote
jerzeeD Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 True.... and apparently no more pungee stick jokes that some might not understand. Quote

ClackerBuzz Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Always change ur payment option in Paypal to ur backup source ie visa credit card. my visa protects me 1000 x's better than paypal and ebay combined. i purchased a pair of snowboard boots mens size 12. they were actually an italian 44. look up a conversion chat and you'll get 10 different answers. its a no brainer i should have gotten my money back. they were too small (11) and neither paypal or ebay would do anything about it. last time i ever used my bank account as a funding option. only had 2 other bad experienced and i trumped paypal and ebay by going straight to Visa who kicked their ass immediately and refunded my money. they put the burden of proof on the seller NOT the buyer. oh and... DON'T DO IT! Quote
