midnighthrasher Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 only ever used a booyah chatterbait but not much luck. Anyone have any luck.. they are on special and im thinking of getting some. any recommendations.....z-man, strike king, phenix Quote
The Rooster Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I got a few of the Z-man baits in the 3/8 size. Haven't caught anything on them yet but I haven't used them a lot. I know they have a very heavy vibration to them, at least twice what a tandem bladed spinnerbait has. I'd imagine they would be useful as night fishing lures or as muddy water baits based on level of vibration. Quote
bassnleo Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Been a fan of the chatter style baits since they became popular. I've caught hundreds, if not thousands, of fish on them. Like any other bait, they have a time and a place to be used. Do they work? Yep! Quote
midnighthrasher Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 what brand have you had luck on???? Quote
EastTexasBassin Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I've had good luck with the 'original' chatterbaits, but the hooks are extremely dull out of the package. Always sharpen them. My best fish have come from this 3 step method. 1. remove the skirt 2. Put a Lake Fork Tackle Live Magic Shad on it. 3. Slow roll it with an occasional twitch or sweep of the rod Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 14, 2009 Super User Posted December 14, 2009 I have two of them, and I found them both. I haven't used them a whole lot. A jig works much better for me. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted December 14, 2009 Super User Posted December 14, 2009 I was told about Chatterbaits a while ago from a friend, but never tried one until recently. When my waters started cooling way down, and the ponds were muddy, I threw my first ever black and blue Chatterbait with a matching Rage Baby Craw. This picture is of my second biggest bass ever, a 7lb 5oz honey that thought they looked pretty good. I am a strong beleiver in them now, and have about 12 of the Z Man Chatterbaits. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 14, 2009 Super User Posted December 14, 2009 The original "original" Chatterbaits had good components. After the company was sold by the inventors, the hooks used are junk. If the package is blister packed and not an envelope, then it is NOT an "original" but the original design. The best copy of the original I have used is the one sold in the *** store which has quality components. edited: I forgot to mention that the original Rad Lures Chatterbait does not have "Original" on the package. Super User CWB Posted December 14, 2009 Super User Posted December 14, 2009 Strike King's Pure Poison have worked well for me. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 Me too...I use the 1/2 oz bluegill pattern..no trailer..they do catch fish Strike King's Pure Poison have worked well for me. Quote
Super User Marty Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 I've used Chatterbaits, Booyah Boogee Baits and Gambler Swim Blades. There are differences in lure action and quality of components, but I've been unable to detect any difference in the number of strikes that they attract. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 Ya'll are killing me. I cannot get bit on those things. Never, ever had a bite. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 I find that hard to believe.... :-/ Sometimes a slower steady retrive works wonders.. Ya'll are killing me. I cannot get bit on those things. Never, ever had a bite. Quote
c17Lat Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 i won $800 in a tx by catching 16 lbs on the strike king version with a craw trailer Quote
angler1 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Z-Man are the original. I love them and have caught many, many fish including my PB 4lb 14oz on the 3/8 black/blue with a 4" black mr. twister split tail grub. I like the 1/2 size the best however they are hard to find. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 Here's a great article by my friend Burnie. We used these last spring with great success for prespawn largemouth that had moved up shallow, but not quite set up on beds. Spinnerbaits were met with a chilly response that day, but chatterbaits accounted for many fish. http://www.burniehaney.com/files/Whats_all_the_Chatter_About_NYBCF_Fishlines_Fall_2008_.jpg Quote
bassnleo Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 what brand have you had luck on???? Just about all of them. I do find myself throwing the original chatterbait more than the others. Unlike others, I've found the hooks to be fine. I do sharpen them often though....... One thing that helped me tremendously........These things are a jig, and I fish them as such. Heavy rod, heavy line. When I get bit I want to make sure I have the power necessary to bury that hook, just like a jig. My current favorite set-up is a Kistler jig and pig special and 30 lb braided line. On occasion I will add a trailer hook but that is mainly if I'm fishing it around sparse cover. The thing is deadly in the Spring. My favorite time to throw it is around emergent weeds and pad stems near spawning areas. Burn it though there and hand on . Quote
brianbass Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 the z-man with the frog legs do good down here in FL. Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I caught my PB largemouth (in avitar) on a red and white chatterbait made by booyah. I may be biased, but i love throwing these especially in black and blue and red and white. Quote

I've got other things that seem to do a better job. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 I've added them to my arsenal for coldwater. I was hearing lots of talk about them for slow-rolling in coldwater and found they are a great coldwater bait, where lots of action with slow horizontal speed is the ticket. I'm sure they would work other seasons too, but there are lots of other horizontal options in warmer water I'm plenty enamored with. I've only used the Z-Man. And yes you DEFINITELY have to sharpen the hook -ESP so in cold water. Another good one (I originally heard used for cold water slow-rolling) is the KARU brand. But I haven't tried this one. I had inquired about how slowly it can be crawled, and remain engaged, and it supposedly does so very well. Quote
bobbyK Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I have had success sort of with the Strike King Pure Poison variety in a couple different colors. Up here in MN, this bait is Northern Pike candy. They cannot and will not leave it alone. Kind of fun since once a Northern makes up his mind that he wants something, he is not shy about it. If they had voices they would probably roar while jumping!! And with all those teeth, they have managed to swim off with more than a few as well. My goal is still to catch a bass with one. christopherjake Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I love chatterbaits! I use 3/4 oz w/ a white skirt and white worm trailer. This is my first bait of choice for bass. Quote
Gangley Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 The Karu Lures does well. It makes quite a bit of vibration and noise as it clacks against the football head. A lot of people have great success with it. Quote
J. M. Richardson Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I like Chatterbaits, but actually use them more often for fishing for northern pike. Bass here in Wisconsin only seem to like the Chatterbaits at night. The heavier ones definitely work well for monster pike though. Quote
