I was watching the ICAST coverage for the new lews BB1 and he said because the anti-reverse isn't infinite and has some play, that he can feel his crankbait better. I dont see how that works, that you can feel it better because of non instant anti reverse. Considering you feel your crankbait when you reel forward.

Someone explain it to me?

You got me, this their answer

"Perhaps most significant is the multistop antireverse. This feature gives anglers the ability to stop the reel at just the right spot when a fish bites. This is especially useful for crankbait fishing."

I don't get it either. Doesn't the bass stop the reel during a strike..

I don't understand it either. But I don't think infinite anti-reverse is the be-all and end-all of reels, because when there's play it's usually a small fraction of an inch which I don't think makes a difference.

Sounds like a sales ploy to sell an inferior product?

As a salesman, I agree with the "sales ploy" part. However, I do NOT agree with calling this reel an inferior product before you have even had a chance to use it.

Im a fan of instant anti-reverse. In all honesty, after seeing the new Lews offerings this year, Abu Garcia looks that much better (coming from someone that owns ALL Lews reels).

Most pros have some type of quirk, Woo Daves often used a spincast reel to fish T-rigged worm and David Fritts is no different, he had a lot of say in the new BB1 and he didn't want infinite anti-reverse. The reson is he works a crankbait almost like a live bait technique called stiching, he reels the bait down to depth and then "feels" the bait back to him, I tried this and it isn't for everyone as it is painstaking slow and you couldn't use it as a search option, it is basically for fishing brush piles and humps where you know fish are located. As far as making that way of fishing easier or not I don't know but Fritts has long been known to use reels without infinate anti reverse.

He probably just goofed up his words he was instructed to say. I like to use my old Ambassaduer 5500 C3 without anti-reverse on crankbaits. That little "back partial turn stop," allows the fish to suck the crank in deeper. Maybe that is what he meant.

But, yeah as far as feeling the different, I doubt it.

maybe by giving it that play it slows down reaction time or something for better hook sets so you don't rip the hooks out of the fish so by having that give in the reel where you would normally have it in the rod or line idk

I don't know what they mean by that, but I frequently give cranks just a little slack when I bump something with them

I agree with Wdy on this one. I think it is just to let the fish get a hold of the bait before setting the hook.

Wouldn't a limber tip do the same? I use moderate action for all my crank rods. I'm not sure I want the reel to slip.

This is the way I understood it as well. A moderate action rod and mono will accomplish the same thing.

It definitly sounds like a sales gimmick. I heard another pro say there was no stretch in floro.

I've heard Fritts say that too, but I think Lew's will regret creating the reel with that feature down the road. If it was so great back in the day there would have been other companies producing cranking reels with slop in them. I have one of the original BB1's and have never gotten used to the backplay...it was a well-built and smooth cranking reel otherwise.

I don't see how back-play in the handle could help, but I'd prefer to actually try a reel with that feature before passing judgement. But anyway, the 6.4:1 and 7.1:1 BB1Z reels do not have the multi-stop anti-reverse. The BB1HZ, BB1HZL, BB1SHZ, & BB1SHZL models all have 9+1 bearing support, according to the Lew's website. The 5.1:1 cranking reels are the only reels in the series with the multi-stop AR.
