SkintBack Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I have fished all my life and generally used lower middle to middle grade equipment. I have been registered for a while and have spent my time reading and studying he site - which is great!! I have reached the point in my life where less is more if it is better equipment which brings me to the thread topic. I have 3 pfleuger president spinning reels (20 for panfish, 30 and 35 for bass), a Revo S, a BPS PQ, a quantum MG, and an oldr Daiwa - I think a procaster. The Daiwa will be replaced soon by another Revo s or either another PQ. I bought a Powell endurance 6'7" MH during the memorial day sale at TW and love the feel and weight. I really like the rod a lot but have only fished it one time so far. This purchase really got me wanting better quality rods and started this quest. I Was already wanting to buy a single series of good rods so everything felt the same when I changed from one technique to the next. I was looking at St Croix before the Powell rod but happened on the sale and went ahead and bought it. This post is primarily about the legend tournaments but I would love to know how they compare to the endurance series. I am wanting to buy four rods from the same series and I want them to be good quality. While I am saving my money, I have some questions. 1. Is the St Croix Legend Tournament better than the Powell Endurance? I realize that better is subjective but I am lpoking for sensitivity and quality with good balance and overall weight. 2. I want a single series that all feel the same and St Croix seems to offer more selection than the Endurance series. I just like these two rods but am open to other manufacturers but 250 is my tip top so if it costs more it is out!! 3. I am looking to buy a casting and spinning rod by Chistmas and run purchase two additional rods in the spring. Specifically, I am wondering about the Legend Tournament casting TBC71MF OR TBC71MHF. The medium rod is listed as a plastics rod while the medium heavy is listed for spinnerbaits, jigs, and worms. The primary use for this rod is t-rigged plastics and jigs. I generally don't pay much attention to listed rod uses as long as the weights of the line and lures are in range with what I will use. However, I always preferred MH FOR t-rigs over a medium but have read St Croix runs heavy as compared to other manufacturers. Advice on these rods greatly appreciated. 4. The spinning rods I am looking at from St Croix are Legend Tournament bass TBS610MLXF or TBS610MXF. I use my spinning rods for more of a general purpose than specific technique but do like to drop shot some. Most of the time my spinner is for light lures, some top water (poppers and tiny torpedoes), weightless plastics and small spinnerbaits. Sorry for being so long winded. I have been saving up for a while and let it all out at once Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 14, 2012 Super User Posted July 14, 2012 I've never used a Powell rod, but I can say the st croix LT's are very proven. Far as 'technique' branding goes, it's more of a marketing ploy and doesn't mean you need one for every lure. If your interested in the previous LT model, st croix bargin bin has the 7' MH for a good price http://www.stcroixrods.com/shop/products/Legend_Tournament_Bass_Casting_Rod_LTBC70MHF-329-23.html They do run a bit heavier but it's not like one raiting higher, just a bit above the raiting. I bought one for my wife, for the first week she didn't use it and kept telling me to have it. I finally got her to use it and now there's no way it'll ever be mine. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted July 14, 2012 Super User Posted July 14, 2012 Only rods i fish are legend tourneys and legend xtremes(except for 2). Wouldnt trade them for anythng. Fantastic rods. Some blank st.croix makes are underrated. Some are not. I qctually own the ltb 7'1 mhf. Rod will exceed your expectations if you havent used higher end rods. The rod is very sensitive. As for your spinning set up, i would personally go with the 610mlxf. I use the legend xtreme 69mlxf and its probably my favorite rod i own. I use it for pitching ng 1/16oz - 5/16 oz jigs for walleye and then most all finese bass fishing. 3/8 weight would be the max id use for either rod as the tip would start to lose its purpose. Id be using casting gear anyway bass fishing with that weight. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 14, 2012 Super User Posted July 14, 2012 I am a big St Croix fan, and own 3 LTB's, and eventually, when $$$ allows, all my other St Croix's will be traded in for LTB's and I will not buy anything else new now either thats not a LTB. The 7' M/F LTB "Teaser" and 7' MH/F LTB "Sweeper Spinnerbait", and the 7'10" H/Mod "Magnum Cranker" are the three casting rods I own, I also owned and foolishly sold the 7'6" MH/Mod fast "pitching" and 6'6" M/F "jerkbait" rods......I wish I had them back. They are very light, very sensitive, and well made. If your looking for "General Purpose" rods from St Croix, go with Medium Power, I thing the 6'8" M/XF spinning, and the 7'1" M/F casting would be a great set of "do-all" rods. Quote
kschultz76 Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I'm personally hooked on St. Croix now. My old man has had a selection of Loomis rods over the years - GL3's, IMX's, and some GLX's. I've had a GL2 spinning rod for a couple of years he bought me. Just started looking to upgrade all my old cheap rods with lighter more sensitive gear that I can finally afford it. First one I got after A LOT of research was a previous model year LTB casting 6'8" M XF from their Bargain Room online. Night and day difference between this rod and the GL2 I have, the LTB is a beautiful thing. I got that rod almost two weeks ago, a couple days after getting it I went back to their Bargain Room and picked up a LTB casting 6'6" MH F, and an LTB spinning 6'6" ML F. I also recently bought an Avid spinning 6'6" M F. Over the next year or so I plan on buying another 4 rods, and they'll all be either St. Croix Avid or Legend Tournament Bass rods. I've used quite a lot of different fishing gear over the years, including my Dad's Loomis gear. And honestly for the price even if I could afford all top end Loomis gear I don't think I'd spend the money, these St Croix rods are amazing for the price. I'm not a tournament fisherman, I don't make money off of this, so for me St. Croix Avid's and LTB's are as good as it can get. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 14, 2012 Global Moderator Posted July 14, 2012 I have the 6' 10" M/F "shakeyhead" spinning rod. I really like the rod for shakeyheads, light texas rigs, and chompers on standup heads but like ww2 said the 6' 8" M/F is probably a better all around rod. I have a couple of the St.Croix LTB and all of my rods are St.Croix. I'm hoping to convert all mine to the LTB rods also as money allows. They are great rods and very durable and sensitive. I have never fished a Powell so can't say they're better but they are really great rods. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 I have not used the St. Croix line you are talking about, but I know they make fantastic rods. I do have two Powell Endurance series, the 723C and 6103. (My personal rule of not spending more then $200 for a rod or reel kicks in, but prevent the poorhouse from expensive bait monkey.) I love my Powell's they took a little getting used to. My 723C says it's an extra fast tip, yeah, not sure about that but, the hook setting power is what got me hooked on that series of rods. So much back bone with the rod, I rarely loose a fish after setting the hook. Plus, the sensitivity is there, it has enough to feel everything, (I mainly use P-line Flourclear on my reels). I think *** has a deal where you can try a rod out and then send it back if you dont like it. But, you are not going to to wrong with either rod, I guess $$ might be the difference. Quote
