Super User eyedabassman Posted January 23, 2010 Super User Posted January 23, 2010 I would just like to see what everyone has to say on this? If this was posted before, sorry.Which one do you like to throw? Quote
Simp Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Are you asking do we like Buzz frogs (solid) or the Spro Rajas Frog (hallow)? I'm assuming you are and honestly they are two very different baits. I like the Rage Toad (A buzz style frog) in more open water and when I want to cover ground. It's also better on stained to muddy water. The spro style frog is great for taking your time and seducing that big fish to bite. It's also great on clear water because it doesn't spook fish and the walking action will call fish from far away. I could go on but it's late so I'm going to bed. Maybe I'll post more tomorrow or rather later today. ;D Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted January 23, 2010 Author Super User Posted January 23, 2010 Yes, that is what I did mean about the two as a slop bait. Quote
wisconsin heat Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 i like hollow frogs better, but with the elaztech hard legs frogz i think these floating little critters will become my new favorite slop lure... Quote

Matt Kremers Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 I like to throw what the fish want to eat. Some days like like a fast moving Stanley Ribbit, sometimes they like a Spro frog. I suggest you get a few of each and practice with them. Each has its own features and benefits. That being said, I usually start with a Ribbit style frog to cover more water. Then when I find them I might throw a Spro to see if they like it better. Quote
texlwedge Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 My frog of choice is either the Vicious poly Wog or the El Grande Lures Sapo. Both are buzz type frogs and come in a variety of color patterns. I use a 4/0 frog hook w/ a medium hitch hiker. Quote

Oh no they will absolutely destroy a Spro Frog in open water when your walking it. IMHO it's all in the walk. It's like KVD and the way he walks about "triggering" a strike. I feel I'm able to do that with different style's of walks I use. Granted this isn't my first bait of choice to use in a open water setting, but if I've been using it and I round a point that's fairly open I have plenty of confidence in the frog to continue working it. That is as long as the conditions are right for it. For instance you don't want to be throwing the frog on a windy day on a windy point. For the most part the spro style frog is a visual lure that isn't very intrusive. This usually means bigger fish, but uneffective under conditions that would prevent the spro frog to be noticed. Open water isn't one of those conditions. However you may find a spro frog in Pearl to be more effective in open water because it resembles a shad more rather then a frog. In open water bass will key on shad more then they would a frog. Around vegetation I like using local frog colors and colors that look like a sunfish or bluegill. Now on the subject of buzz frogs. I prefer them over a buzz baits because they are more weedless. I also feel they say on top of the water better. You can also let it drop after a weed line or after a missed strike making it look stunned or injured. They are also fantastic for covering water early in the morning and concentrating on the edges of grass or pads. Then later in the day when the sun comes out and the fish move back into the thick stuff I switch to a Spro Frog and pick apart the cover. Quote
PondHunter Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 I like the hollow frogs better because I get a much better hookset with them since the body compresses, and they stay on top of the slop really well. Quote
simplejoe Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 I fish with both types of frogs, so I don't have a favorite. I'll use the hollow body frogs (Spro being my favorite) for when I'm pitching under boat docks or trees, when the fish want something sitting still or I'll walk it back to the boat. Like Simp said "it's all in the walk". I'll use solid frogs ( Rage Tail my favorite) for when I find grass or lily pads. I do this when the fish are real active, I'll burn it across the lily pads or grass and stop it around 2 feet past the edge in open water. Another way with soft frogs is rip it across lily pads and stop it in the holes of lilys and let it sink for a second and wiggle your rod tip so the frog looks like its wiggling around trying to get out and back on the pads.
