Aluma-Bass Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Just got me a Nichols flutter spoon and was curious on how to hook it up. Do you use a swivel snapped onto spoon or put a swivel about 1ft up and use a leader? I wouldn't think direct tie would be best option bc of spoon spinning so much during a retrieve causing line twist. I hate using swivels at all but i can see where it would work best in this case. Primus Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I appreciate you bringing up this topic, I bought a few flutter spoons a few years back from Lake Fork & Strike King but never got around to fishing them. I plan on changing that on the next few outings as I want to give the local fish a different look. I would appreciate any tips on retrieve, size , brand color etc. Quote

Super User Gatorbassman Posted July 12, 2012 Super User Posted July 12, 2012 Thank you. I've been trying to catch fish on this for a few weeks now and I just found out that I was fishing it wrong. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 another mark rose video: Looks like he is direct tieing Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 13, 2012 Super User Posted July 13, 2012 Spoons will cause line twist even with braid. I fish spoons with leaders tied with a swivel, crane swivels will not reduce line twist but BB ones do help a little bit, also different style spoons cause less or more twist. My spoons and lures are attached using a loopknot, regardless whether the spoon out of the box has a swivel, split ring, or nothing. I do not put extra effort into putting on additional hardware, one reason is I get cut off so much it just doesn't pay. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted July 14, 2012 Super User Posted July 14, 2012 There's another video out there with KJ on Flutter Spoons, too. The Spaits in THE BEST, really. The Nichols is an OK spoon, it twists more because it doesn't have to front to back rock that a lot do. I like it for certain situations. The best way to fish them, unfortunately, is on braid with a swivel 12-18 inches above and a flouro leader. I fish them on heavy fluoro, but braid is infinitely better. There's no wrong way to fish them, really. I catch fish vertically, on a horizontal plane, short hopping, ripping off humps, over grass, in timber and fishing it over suspended fish. They're a dynamite way to get a school of fish fired up on point in fall, too. You can do so much with them, many, many guys just forget about them. Quote
RyneB Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 this technique is my little secret on the strip mine i fish. Everyone else is throwing spinnerbaits and plastics. But the flutter spoon is absolutely deadly. Quote
RyneB Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 btw, i always tie on a power swivel. Not because it makes the action better, but thats how i started fishing them. Thats what i have confidence in. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 14, 2012 Super User Posted July 14, 2012 I haven't had much luck in the past with these and have learned a lot from this thread. Thanks for posting this topic, if anything, I'll give them another whirl. Quote
