basslover12345 Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 How would I attach all of this together to mold in Plaster paris without it coming out of the mold all messed up? I want to use it as a jig trailer, should I use mend-it or hot glue? I have a hot glue gun Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 12, 2012 Super User Posted July 12, 2012 mend it would be the method of choice as far as making a mold no clue Quote
basslover12345 Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 Mend-it. A soldering iron. A lighter. Many good tutorials on You tube about mold making. I use resin and works great. Strong, good detail, and you dont need to seal it. A quart of resin is like $10. you will use less than half per mold. ....Bill What type of resin? I shop at Home-Depot, and what type of pan would I pour it in? Quote
basslover12345 Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 Fiberglass resin. Its made for automotive body work. Bondo is one of the brand names. I use a pyrex pan. You need a really smoth bottom. I use crazy glue to glue the flat side of the bait down real good and tight (this prevents too much sanding later). You can scrape the dried glue off with a razor later and reuse it for other molds. Pour water into your pan to see how much resin you need to cover the bait by an inch or so. Now pour the water into a 1 pint tupperware (like 1 pound of potato salad comes in) and mark with a sharpie the water line. This way you know how much resin you need. Pour that water into a measuring cup so you know how many ounces it is how much hardener you need to add to the resin.. Here are a couple I made. Zoom finese worm and misc trailers. They still need a little more sanding but work well. I have bad eyes and stink at hand pouring. ...Bill Would you reccomend I use one of the pans I have currently (my moms kitchen pans) or buy a new one? Also what size pan should I buy for just a one cavity mold? And how big a container of resin should I buy for 1 mold? Quote
basslover12345 Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 And how would resin hold up to those thin apendages? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 13, 2012 Super User Posted July 13, 2012 One thing you need to remember is when you make a flat fiberglass mold your bait is going to be flat on one side. If youy want a fully round bait you will need to either make a 2 pieve mold which will require you suspend your bait in modeling clay or something similar, or send it to a mold maker and have it machined out of aluminum which will set you back a pretty penny but it will last. The fiberglass last too unless you drop it but it does require some skill especially when it comes to a 2 piece mold. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 13, 2012 Super User Posted July 13, 2012 I use nonstick pans from Wally world. I glue down the baits, spray with cooking oil, mix Bondo, pour, go away for 24 hours. Quote
jbass Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Don't use your Mom's pans, that itself is a bad idea. Make the molds in the garage or outside somewhere. The resin stinks and again trouble with Mom, don't even want to go there. Good luck with your baits. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted July 21, 2012 Super User Posted July 21, 2012 Just to let you know, one of your craw arms is backwards! but to the real question, I've made some molds before of my favorite plastics. I thought I would use them all the time but rarely do. Anyways, watch this video, if you want to do some 2 piece molding Quote
