Hello all... my name is BJ, and I'm a fairly new bass fisherman living in Odessa FL (just north of Tampa). Not totally new to fishing... still remember going out with my dad over 40 years ago on some camping/fishing trips... but just recently have really gotten back into it thanks to having my OWN son (now 8 years old). I'm an adult leader in Cub Scouts as well, trying to find some distractions to tear the kids away from those <bleep>-ing handheld game systems!

Although this part of Florida tends to be more saltwater fishing oriented, there are some good bass spots around here (like Lake Tarpon) and some very good ones less than one hour away, so I'm hoping for good opportunities. Unfortunately I don't have (and likely won't have) a boat so it's either rentals, charters, or pier/dock fishing. I'm most comfortable with spinning outfits, but for Father's Day I got a "new" Quantum Accurist baitcasting reel that I plan to use for flipping (one of my favorite fishing methods). Made a pilgrimage to the Orlando Bass Pro store with my son, spent a good afternoon there picking up a few things.

I'm still struggling a bit on how to keep my stuff organized and ready for use, and particularly how to rig everything so that it's kind of "modular" (pieces "plug" together interchangeably and without a lot of knot tying out on/by the water). Of course, had my mistake experience with a cheap snap-swivel... first time I went to cast my brand new Jitterbug it went sailing off while the line fell limp, and I reeled back nothing but a broken snap. Now it's only ball-bearing swivels and duolock (or coastlock) snaps when absolutely needed. I'm also trying to get an idea of what the best practical selection of lures would be -- have to tell you, there are over 24000 species of fish and I think over 24000 types of lures! Makes my head spin a bit.

I doubt if I'll be posting much, but trust me -- I'll be reading darn near everything! And I'd love to hear from others in/around my area (zip code 33556)...

-- BJ

welcome to the site man, I live right off SR54

Very cool!! Would love to talk with you some more... are you closer to the NPR or Zephyrhills end of 54 (or somewhere in the middle)? I'd love to hear your recommendations for good local tackle/supply shops.
