JunkYard814 Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I'm trying to get into frog fishing. I just put together a set-up and now I'm trying to get the hang of fishing them. I have a Lew's Tournament Speed Spool lined with 50lb power pro and right now it's matched up with a St. Croix Mojo cranking rod until I can get together funds to by a more ideal rod. Now I'm looking for good frog's to throw. I've thrown Zoom Horny Toads and Yum Money frogs, but I was having a little difficulty because the set up I have is a little to heavy for them. I wanted to try a heavier frog so I got a Scum Frog. Obviously you get what you pay for and I was not happy with it. I've heard a lot about Spro, but I'm still having a hard time justifying paying $12 for a lure, even if the chances of me losing it are low. What kind of frogs do you guys like/ recommend? I'd prefer something in the $6-$8 range, but ultimately I'll probably end up getting trying the Spro or something equivalent. Quote

nickw234 Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 If you don't want to spend the money go with the Booyah Pad Crasher. Its only $5.99 or so and it seems softer than a Spro and just as soft as the Koppers Live Target. 1 Quote

RobbyZ5001 Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I have had the best luck with Koppers Hollow Body and River 2 Sea Bully Wa. They don't take on as much water as my Spro's. I always need to doctor the Spro's up. Quote
mikey5string Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 how do you stop them from taking water? I have that issue with frogs and have developed a habit of squeezing them after every cast. When I get a bass they usually mangle the thing and slide it down the hooks. Quote

When I get a bass they usually mangle the thing and slide it down the hooks. Well as stated the koppers as well as the river 2 sea don't sink as easily. For the others, I just use silicone and partially seal the hole where the hook comes out. You want to make sure they the frog compresses easily after you apply silicone. The silicone usually holds up for awhile, but I will have to reapply periodically. Quote

I usually superglue the nose so it doesnt pull down as easily but I think this is worse as it causes the rubber to tear after a few fish pulling on it. Now just got to find a way to get a tiny drop of silicone on there. Quote

I use a fair amount, but still make sure the frog can easily be compressed and decompressed. Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted July 12, 2012 Super User Posted July 12, 2012 I have spro, TruTungsten, Snagproof, and Scum frogs and honestly I like the scum frog the best yeah they get torn up easy but there like 3 bucks if I can get 10 fish on it its already doing better then most plastics every ones in love with and they hold out much longer then 10 fish. the biggest thig that destroys my scum frogs are northern pike but id rather have em tear up a cheap scum frog making it look like swiss cheese then a 10 dollar spro. I put a little dab of super glue on my scum frogs when they get really bad they never seem to take on water or sink if I get all the holes. White with a white and red skirt and "eat me" written on the bottom lol Quote

I like scum frogs when I need a floater but if I'm just buzzing a frog I put on a Ribbit. The Scum Frog will last about as long as one Ribbit but for the price of a Scum Frog you get 5 Ribbits. Quote
