EvanT123 Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Fished a small pool off a creek today and lost quite a few small plastics crawling across the bottom. Usually fish rivers and reaction baits. How normal is it to lose more baits crawling across the bottom? Quote
EvanT123 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 Worked these baits t-rigged. Should I skin hook or bury it deeper ? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 8, 2012 Global Moderator Posted July 8, 2012 Depends on the terrain. This time of year if I'm fishing a small pool and get snagged I just go in after it unless I'm planning on fishing it for awhile and don't want to spook the fish, then I'll break off instead. Rocks tend to be the worst bait eaters when you're crawling the bait along the bottom. Quote
EvanT123 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 That's basically what I'm fishing rocks with a craw Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 8, 2012 Super User Posted July 8, 2012 I'm a broke single dad/cop so I can't afford to lose much. I fish all plastics Texas rigged weedless and when wacky rigging I use a weedless Mustad hook too. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 8, 2012 Super User Posted July 8, 2012 You will lose baits if you throw them where the fish live. If you don't want to lose baits then 1) don't throw them; and 2) don't throw them where the fish live. Try a weedless hook in the future. You can find them at BPS and Cabela's plus Tackle Warehouse, etc. I use them all the time for plastics thrown into the structure and trash. You can use a weedless hook for a Texas rig, too. Good luck and keep losing those baits!!!! Quote
"Lunker Hunter" Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 One thing I have learned is that when I hit a snag instead of trying to pull it free I will gently lift my rod tip a jiggle the line sometimes the bait just rolls over the obstruction. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted July 8, 2012 Super User Posted July 8, 2012 If you fish from the bank you are going to lose lures, it's just part of the drill. If you fish from a boat buy a plug knocker and you will be able to recover 90% or better. Quote
BassAssassin726 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 If youre not losing baits, youre not throwing them where the fish live. Its all part of the game. I use some weedless hooks, but remember theres a big difference between weedless and snagless. Quote

X2 and try using a smaller weight. Quote
AndyTN Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 In summer, I fish mainly soft baits at night in 15-20 ft of water. The bottom stucture is rocky making my weight more of an issue then my hook most of the time. I can fish a C Rigged worm with an egg sinker easier then a T Rig with a bullet weight which seems to find every crevice it can to drop into. Since it is the weight I can usually clear it by simply positioning the boad on the opposite side of the retrieve and popping it out with no damage to the worm at all. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 try fishing weightless. texas rigged. you will get hung up much less. i fish from the bank alot and find if i use a spinning reel i can throw just about bait far enough, even weightless. Quote
