BassAssassin726 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 A huge lake, a massive river, but you have found one log on the bank. Miles and miles of shoreline but this one stump is all you need. You know she is there, waiting for prey to pounce on. You flip your jig to the log, it barely makes a ripple in the water as it enters and slides down the stump. Out of the darkness you see her face, she sizes up your jig and inhales it. You rear back with all your might and set the hook, the fight is on. She zigs this way, zags that way, heaves herself from the water trying to spit your hook, but she cant. She gets close and you reach down, grab her by the lip and lift her into the boat. In that moment we become one with the wild, we are the predator, and she has become the prey. You lower her back into the water, making sure she has recovered and is ready and she slides from your hand back into the depths. Nothing better in the world. 3 Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted July 6, 2012 Super User Posted July 6, 2012 Yep, and when I see that this time of year, I wake up! Quote
BassAssassin726 Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 The inspiration for this came today while i was fishing a cove off of Neshaminy Creek. I was walking the banks and say a log sticking out of the water about 15 feet out and in about 7 feet of water. I stayed back and made a long cast with my Yum Dinger. As soon as it hit the water boom, nice 3 pounder. Next cast to the log, boom, another nice 3 pounder. 3rd cast to the log, BOOM, a husky 4 pounder. They were stacked up on that log like theres no tomorrow. Quote
MultiSpeciesFisherman Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Yeah this year for me has been more like: You walk down to that one dam you have fished since you were a child. You stop for a moment to take in all of the sights, sounds, and smells. Flashes of your childhood come roaring back to you, hand in hand with your grandfather who has carefully begun to instill his fishing wisdom in your young mind. You have all of your bass rods ready and are sure today will be the day for that catch of a lifetime. You make your first cast and bullseye! Right in the exact spot you know that big smallmouth is hiding. You begin your retrieve. Any time now and it will be game on. As your bait inches back to the shore, you get the feeling that big pig has been following you up all the way. Suddenly, it happens! Your bait comes out of the water and it's time for cast number two. You repeat because surely that last cast was nothing more than a fluke. You know there have to be huge smallmouth in here just waiting for their prey. Again...nothing. Before long, you have thrown upwards of fifty casts and don't even have one 6 incher to show for it. You decide to switch it up, and are sure you have a perfect solution to finally get some fish out of the river. So you get into your tackle box, and find just the right thing! You pick up your pole, put on a worm and a bobber, and begin fishing no more than 2 feet from shore and sure enough...you catch sunfish after sunfish, none any larger than about 4 inches, but you have the satisfaction of knowing you have not been skunked. You go home feeling both satisfied and yet empty, but you know for some reason you will be going back the next day, and the next day, and the next day..... But your story definitely sounds better than mine! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 6, 2012 Global Moderator Posted July 6, 2012 It's nice when it works like that, I've had a couple times this year I could have called my shot but most of my bigger bass have been from unexpected places it seems including my 6.10 biggest so far this year that was sitting on a nothing bank in about a foot of water. BassAssassin726 Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 My biggest this year was 6-8. She came off a sunken boat in one of those coves. Caught her on a Havoc Boyd Duckett Juice Worm. Love them things! @Multi, thats why i always have my ultra light rod with me, in case i get skuned on bass i can always tie on a small grub and catch tons of bluegills and crappie. Ive been having a killer year, even with the heat. And its only my 2nd year bass fishing! Thanks to this site for making me a much better fisherman in a short time. Quote
