Super User slonezp Posted July 6, 2012 Super User Posted July 6, 2012 Pro's? Con's? My current phone broke and I have a loaner. I have uscellular and won't be changing providers. I'm due for a phone. I'm in my mid 40's and have never had a smartphone. I'm not into all the FB and Twitter. I don't play video games. I have an Ipod. I can see a slight advantage using it for work related stuff but find it hard justifying the $25 bucks a month for internet service. They don't give you much selection anymore for the stupidphones. An upgraded version of my current phone will cost more to purchase than a smartphone. Can anyone help me justify the extra $300 a year? Anything else I'm missing as far as these phones? Quote
Broke bass fisherman Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I use my IPhone for everything. It's my camera when I fish, I keep my fishing logs on here, I am on this forum whenever I want to be through my phone. I personally like smart phones because it allows me to be productive in dead times. I also use the internet and maps built in to find ponds and other water sources that I can fish... And I can also play games if I get stuck on the bank with no action on the rod... Lol Summary is they are great if you can utilize them, if not then a regular phone should be what you get IMHO. Quote
Jim_M Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 (edited) I needed the easy to see big screen the new Samsung Galaxy 2 provides. Using it for EVERYTHING at work and play. With recommendations from geek co-workers I have one through Sprint. With my company's discount it has true unlimited everything at a good price (for me). No way I can have time and access limits with my business. Check them out. Amazing piece of equipment. I even have a Ballistic Calculator app I use for rifle shooting. BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 6, 2012 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 6, 2012 Get the Galaxy III. Awesome phone, easy to use, free apps, etc. Why get a smartphone? I asked that myself when I first got one. Now I can't live without one. It's just one of those things that, once you get one, you wonder how you got along without one. Kinda like side imaging and Power-Poles. 1 Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 6, 2012 Super User Posted July 6, 2012 I'm too dumb to have a smartphone. My old dumbphone will take pictures. Don't do facebook or any of the social sites, where folks chat about what they did, and what they are doing. Ex wives/husbands or soon to be exes, do battle on facebook, airing dirty laundry for the world to see. Lookee ex, I've got a new "partner". So have I says the other. Then comes the nasty stuff. I have two relatives who are doing battle with their exes on Facebook. It's a sordid, sorry mess. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted July 6, 2012 BassResource.com Administrator Posted July 6, 2012 I never use Facebook nor Twitter on my smartphone, other than to read what others have posted. I'm just not that much into it. I use the Weather Channel app the most, probably. I also use the ScanRadio app, where I can listen to the police and fire radio chatter in my area. Kinda addictive. Traveler2586 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I've been told some in the industry can tell the age of the user by the type of phone and the number of app's they have. Quote

Super User Long Mike Posted July 6, 2012 Super User Posted July 6, 2012 I hate to admit it, but I now have a smartphone. It's a Galaxy Somethingorotther. I'm beginning to learn how to use it, but, at this point, my phone is much smarter than me. I confess that I am not yet into all of the features it supposedly offers. All I really wanted was a regular phone, but it seems they are being phased out. This old dog will have to learn new tricks. To be honest, I'm kinda looking forward to it; except for texting. I HATE TEXTING! If you want to talk to someone, use the frigging phone and call them! Quote

ClackerBuzz Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I still using a flip phone, does that mean I'm 60 years old? Lol, I'm joking. That makes me 62yrs old b/c I have a flip too! ha. I use my phone for exactly that=talking. And I text which is covered. I can't justify paying the money for a $martphone b/c I use my computer everyday. I check everything on my computer=email, weather, traffic, BR. Its easier and much faster for my taste. I'm must have ADD b/c I have 4 gigs of memory/speed and its too slow for me. Small screens and slow internet pages loading on a phone would drive me insane. If I HAD to be connected to the matrix b/c email's I would get one. As stated the apps are GREAT...and addictive. You are pretty much guaranteed to find a bunch of apps you'll love and will never look back. The only time I really wish I had one is when I'm lost b/c Google maps is great but for $800 a year I'll keep using old fashion paper maps. Bottom line> If you have the extra money...get one. It will be your newest favorite toy. If money is an issue...you can't miss what ya never had. Quote

I can wait days or hours to check out web forums, or other things i check. Plus I have never really had a job were I have down time. If there is down time were I work. I will find some thing do to. Its better getting caught looking busy then sitting on the phone. PLus since I always have cold fingers. Smart phones never work for me. Money is not a issue for me. I just like spending my money on some thing more use full. Like tools, car parts, or fishing gear. I still use paper maps also. If I am going some were I print off were I am going. If I get lost. All I have to figure out what way is north, south, east and west. I can usually find my way back to were I need to go. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 6, 2012 Super User Posted July 6, 2012 I've had a smart phone for several years, I do not utilize all the features available to me as I don't really need them. The only app that gets a workout is stock market index futures, most of the time I leave the phone in the car. If you need an app to learn a fishing knot you are probably best served by practicing it at home in front of your pc, you won't even need that app. I'm not against smart phones, great tool if one really needs it for business, but if the primary business use is to make and receive calls, all the other functions really don't matter. Smart phones are made for 2 reasons, the modern generation's lifestyle and for the phone companies to make more money off your data plan. When I'm fishing or doing some other activity, I don't want to play games, a smart phone will not help catch more fish, it's distraction and my main gripe is in daylight my screen is very difficult to see, I'll be going back to a flip phone and If I want pic, I'll take a cheap camera with me. Save your money and your time, you'd be wasting both. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 for as little as i use a phone(i hate phones mostly) it wouldnt be worth it for me to get a smart phone, much less pay a monthly bill. i got a cheap little trac phone from walmart, mainly if for an emergency. i might use it 5 times a week, only family and a couple close friends have the number. i buy a 20 or 30 dollar phone card every 3 months and i get double minutes on it. its all i need and i cant justify spending more on a phone, especially when i will rarely use it. and no offense to people with smartphones, this probably doesnt apply to all of you, but ive met and seen many people who seem to let their cellphone dictate their lives, i find it quite sickening Quote
