ClackerBuzz Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I’m becoming a big fan of shorter rods (for accuracy) and more power (for hook sets). Any recommendations for a rod company that has a nice line of 6’6” to 7’ rods with Heavy to Extra/Mag Heavy power and extra fast tips. Let me know if you think the company underrates or overrates their rods. I’ve read through tons of old post and see people sometime comment on how a company rates their rod power and whether they think is it underrated/overrated. This is very helpful b/c I have to pay for return shipping if I’m not happy with the rod. If they overrate their rods I will step down and get a Med Heavy. I like stout rods b/c a lot of the time I am off balance and need the rod to do the work for good hook sets (from shore I will hang from a tree to get in a good cast; and my kayak is 8’ so I can’t swing for the fences w/o tipping it). At this point I paying $100-200 for a rod. I’m now searching below $99 just to find the right rod. I’m looking for: Short Stout/Heavy Power Rod with Fast Action: 6’6”-7’ heavy to mag heavy power rod with fast to extra fast tip. I bought a 6’7” Powell Endurance MH XF that is underpowered for me so I use it for senkos and light utility work (awesome light weight rod with nice fast tip). I LOVE Powell but think they underrate their power so now I know to step up when buying from them. I returned a Powell 7’3” Heavy and a Dobyns Savvy 7’3” Heavy b/c for me they were both basically longer version/light utility rods that I don’t need in my line up. I just ordered a Powell 7’ Mag Heavy Max rod to give it a try for heavier cover jigs. Are the power ratings accurate on St Croixs? I just saw a post on their bargain room which has some steals. If they are stout their Legend Tourny 7' MH XF looks good at $168. Anyone know if they are light and balanced in ur hands? Frog Rod: I’d like a 7’1”-7’3” frog rod. I see a lot of guys like the Powell Frog rod and Dobyns 735 or 736. They are both the perfect length but I’m worried they might not be enough power. Does anyone like a really stout frog rod w/ EF tip? I will buy a 7’6” if need be. If the Dobyn 736 was Extra Heavy I’d buy it in a minute. Does anyone know how the power rating is on the Lew Tourny Speed Stick 7’2” Extra Heavy? Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions. Quote
rangerjockey Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 In the $ 100 dollar range I think the Denali Jadewood would be hard to beat...They have a 7ft heavy that ought to get the job done. there is also a 6ft 6 MH that I personally have thrown 5/8 oz jigs in 30 plus feet of water and had no trouble turning fish. just a suggestion..
