Fish Chris Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 {toughest year ever} At least I'm catching some Monster Sunnies again In the last couple trips, I've caught two straight up Bluegills, that went 1.7 lbs, and about 12". Brought home 3 Bluegills last week (for dinner) that went 4.3 lbs total. Then yesterday, the big Red Ears were finally starting to come up Whooo Hooo ! Brought home 3 of those, for about 5 lbs, for last nights dinner (way less meat, when filleted.... but its ALL edible ) Plus, the 3rd fish of the day was this monster, which went 3.05 lbs on my certified scale, and 14" To be honest, it didn't fight as "fast" and crazy, as most of the 1 1/2 to 2lb'ers do. Kind of sluggish, but none the less, I'll take a 3 lb Sunfish any day I've caught 3 over 3 lbs now....... I sure would like a 4+ ! I know their are a few in there..... Peace, Fish 1 Quote
tnriverluver Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Nice catch!!! Been doing the same this year. First time bream fishing in nearly 30 years and having a blast. Our local agency lake is full of big bluegills and redears. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted July 3, 2012 Super User Posted July 3, 2012 Hell of a fish, Chris. Don't worry, you're not the only one struggling to catch giant bass this year. Quote
jslacker Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 WOW, nice bluegill, never saw one that big before, in fact I didn't know they got that big! Quote
j.bruno Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Yea it seems like i caught a lot more bigger bass by this time last year. Idk what is up. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 3, 2012 Global Moderator Posted July 3, 2012 Man that is a monster redear. I'd love to catch one of those beasts but they just don't get that big around here, 11" is about as big as I've ever seen in our lakes. Quote
dale.m Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Dadgum! That's a monster! Congrats on the catch! Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted July 3, 2012 Super User Posted July 3, 2012 Dang..........I mean Dang....... BTW, my year has been tiny fish compared to last year....... Jeff Quote
Jig Meister Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 It has been an overall sweltering summer here in Ohio. I am land locked and have done well, but the last 2 weeks have been hard. Early morning has even shut down where I have been fishing. Going to try again this Saturday and see what happens, another week of 95+ heat, super high humidity and not looks like storms, which we need. That is a monster gill, nice and I bet she sure tasted good Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 5, 2012 Super User Posted July 5, 2012 Man, what a beauty! I wouldn't mind catching something like that all day. Never seen one around here anwhere near that size. Too bad about the bass, but not bad compensation. Quote
Super User deep Posted July 5, 2012 Super User Posted July 5, 2012 Wow Fish Chris! You never fail to amaze, and inspire me. A trophy fish of any species is a trophy. Quote
BassCats Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 what were you using to catch those brutes? what size hook are you using? Quote
Gotfishyfingers? Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Dude!!!! That has to be the biggest blue gill I've ever seen. What do those things feed on, Largemouth Bass!!! Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 5, 2012 Super User Posted July 5, 2012 Holy cow Chris, that could eat some of the bass I have been cathcing around here! Quote
Fish Chris Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Much thanks to all of you guys Jig Meister, actually, I let this monster go.... But I did keep 3 of them for dinner, that totaled about 4 1/2 lbs Selective harvest is where its at ! I hope to catch a 4 lb'er someday > and maybe this will be the one ! BassCats, well the lowly "night crawler" of course Fly lined on micro light gear, no weight. Just a #6 Owner Baitholder hook Gotfish, interestingly, this lake is slam full of crawdads, and when I went to empty my live well, I found some partially digested crawdad shells, (that obviously came from one end, or the other, of the Sunfish I kept) yet I have tried tiny dads at this lake (easy to catch by the ramp) and didn't do near so well on them, as I do the crawlers ??? Hmmmm. Okay. Crawlers are easier to keep anyway. Just can't wait to go back. I know their is a 4+ lb'er in there waiting for me ! Peace, Fish Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 7, 2012 Super User Posted July 7, 2012 Fantastic fish. If they got that big around here, I might not bass fish quite so much. Quote
Basswhippa Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I haven't fished for those in years except a few times with small children. You are making me want to go perchjerkin! Thanks for posting this. Quote
