So I always fish for LMB but tonight I'm going out on my girlfriends boat to a lake that's well known for big stripers. I will be fishing from sunset throughtout the night. I've looked into some live bait that's known to be doing well there however I have never rigged live bait before. Any suggestions on rigging? Also are there any lures In particular that might do well at night? I dont even know where to begin looking at lures for stripers. Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

For the live bait, hook them either right through the lips or under the dorsal fin. I saw them catching stripers on swimbaits one time on In-Fisherman, but I know stripers are a lot more leary than most fish.

All I can say for sure is this: be prepared for a battle if you hook one of these things. They are by far the strongest fish I have ever caught, including carp.

Don'tbe afraid to go big on the bait. I usually just hook them through the lips, for the bigger ones only through one lip just like you had just caught the bait. Here in Maryland, saltwater rapalas and saltwater plastics artificials work the best, I don't know the prey over there in arizona though. Stripers tend to be found in very loose schools, although the big females may be alone. You catch one, sit for a while in the same spot and you may catch more.

This time of year they tend to go deep and hang out around the thermocline. If I am not mistaken, I also think they tend to congregate in large schools this time of year. So if you find them, you can end up catching a bunch of them.

If you can't find live bait, we have been killin' 'em on The Rig.

The general response is gizzard shad, but in the water below Pickwick the stripes are very

picky. When gizzards are all that are easy prey, they work fine. But in late June to early

July the threadfin congregate at the dam and the stripes won't touch a gizzard. Later this

month the choice switches to skipjack and virtually nothing else!

My artificial alternative is both topwater and the Alabama Rig. Super Spook is fine for topwater.

For The Rig, I'm using LFT Live Magic Shad weightless on the outside, Johnson Silver Minnow

in the middle.
