I have been fishing for approximate 3 year using live minnow. My only rod is a baitcaster that my brother gave me.

Then end of August last year I was fortunate enough to be talking to a friend of a friend at a BBQ about bass fishing.

He told me to use 5" Senko's with Owner 3/0 hooks and hook it Weightless from top end, and the technique to use.

So on the first weekend of September, my brother and I went out fishing on his boat. My brother always catches way more bass than me as he's been fishing for quite a while. My average is 3 bass in 6 hours.

On this weekend I started using the Senko's.

The weather was great. No wind, sunny and the water is clear.

That day has been the best day's fishing I have ever done.

I caught more fish then my brother, 12 bass in around 6 hours. I was laughing most of the day.

For the rest of last year I used Senko's only.

Using senko's is great when the weather is warm and calm but when it's colder or windy it seems not as good (for me anyway).

I want to try some spinnerbaits with the senko's this bass season.

Any advise on good spnnerbaits to buy for small and large mouth bass?

The lake we fish in has weeds and the water is mainly clear.

So you need some spinner bait advice?  I'd imagine that there are several guys on this site who have opinions about spinner baits.  Let me start.  For the most part, they all work.  Some work better than others.  Quality of construction, wire diameter, head shape & weight, skirt material & color, blade shape & size all play a role in this.

There are many articles that go into extensive detail on these subjects and more.  Spinner bait articles on this forum are a good place to start. The *** web site is another.

Everyone has their opinion on what is & what ain't a decent spinner bait.  Currently, most of the spinner baits that make the cut to get into my boat are Terminators and War Eagles.  You are in Canada.  I've no clue if these baits are available in Canada.  They are available through the web or Bass Pro or Cabelas.

Most folks will say to start out with a white spinner bait, some guys use nothing but white, ever.  My experience last year was a gold war eagle (1/2 oz) with they Spot Remover color skirt worked best.  I fished mostly clearer water last year.  Had I been on more murky or muddy water, I'd have used a different color.

Lots of guys will have opinions on what spinner baits you should get.   The only other thing I'd offer is that if you're going to be throwing spinner baits you need to get another bait casting rig, or you'll waste alot of time cutting off and retying.

What bait caster and what spinner bait rod you should buy is another topic.

I would add....You can throw a spinnerbait Anytime..I have caught bass all hours of the day, wind or no wind..cloudy, or sunshine..ect..

If you have timber in the water, throw them right up against the wood, the let it drop, and be Ready..lol

I would also recomend buying better quality spinners. Have a look at ***s ..he's a sponser here.

Glenn's video is a great place to start! KVD's Proven Spinnerbait Techniques is another DVD that I'd recommend picking up. There's a lot of information there as well. For me, spinnerbaits don't become productive until the water temps hit about 48 degrees. I'll throw them from the time it hits 48 until the late fall when it falls back down below 48. A couple standard colors to start out with that I'd suggest would be a white, chartruese & white, solid chartruese and a black. Most of the waters that I fish are clear so I usually throw a double williow bladed bait with a natural colored skirt except when fishing at night and then I'll throw a single colorado bladed bait with the black skirt. Muddy water conditions I treat similar to night time conditions. Colorado blades mostly with either a black or chartruese skirt.

Many Many Thanks to everyone for the advise. The Video is great and definitely going to help in choosing the starting spinnerbait. I will check out *** web site and others and will also go to BassProShop in February to see if they have some of the spinnerbait that has been mentioned. The bass season in Canada is too short. Have to wait until end of June to try it out  :-/

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks

To be honest, I don't think i've ever used a spinerbait that doesn't catch fish.  My advice, is don't cheap out, because the cheap ones will bend, snap in half, etc.  For the extra dollar or 2 get a known brand, it will last a heckuva lot longer, so it 's worth it.

In terms of techniques, it's a VERY versatile bait, so just experiment.  Any time you try something new, don't keep doing the same thing over and over (unless it's working!)  If you're not catching fish, try varying the technique.  Reel the spinnerbait fast, medium, slow, give a twitch here and there, sometimes you can stop reeling for a second and give it a quick pop.  Don't be afraid to try something different.  Keep mental notes about exactly what you were doing when a fish bites... then try to replicate it.  What I'll do many times is throw a spinnerbait all over the water trying to find the fish.  Once I find the fish, and they stop biting the spinnerbait, I'll follow up with a senko type bait to more thoroughly and slowly work the area.  If you get a hit, but don't hook the fish, it's also a good idea to again follow up with the senko.  Majority of times you'll be pulling in that fish you missed  8-)

Thanks again for additional input from D4u2s0t (especially technique) and NewKidInTown (on Terminator T-1).

Very much appreciated.

BTW .. Told fishing buddy to check out the spinnerbait video. He brought some spinnerbait a while back and the blade did not spin very well as decribed in the video. He thinks they are cheap ones as he brought them a while back.

He is now looking to replace parts on his spinnerbait or buy some new ones.

Thanks again.

Glenn's video is great.

Maybe in your case, just grab a Booyah spinnerbait (good for the price, and always on sale at bass pro), willow leaf blades, silver in clear water like your lake. Skirt color, maybe a white with some blue and chartreuse in them for smallies. I like using a 3/8oz size for smallies up north as no fish will turn down the down sized spinnerbait. Also, if you go up to a heavier spinnerbait, I find they do have a lot of resistance. If you are using a medium action rod, stick with the 3/8 in my opinion. Too much drag and you will find your self fighting the lure all day.

Good luck, I think the spinnerbait/senko is a great combination for you, I use them a ton.

All the best!
