Went fishing this evening on Cheatham Lake (Cumberland River between Old Hickory and Lake Barkley). At the end of the day and on the way back to the ramp was surprised by an Asian Carp trying to jump in the boat. It hit me on the shoulder and bounced back in the lake. Although the incident was pretty funny it's bad news to see one here, guess they are spreading.

Well, at least it didn't hit you in the jewels. You probably wouldn't have noticed, but count yourself lucky anyway.

Lots of them in the rivers around us. They hurt if they come in low and hot and hit you square. Really sucks when one hits me in the ribs while I'm running the boat. No time to react, it's like getting sucker punched in the ribs.

Many, many years ago my family would go to The Rigolets area off highway 90 in south Louisiana to fish the area where Lake Pontchartrain flows into Lake Borgne and fish the saltwater lakes and marsh.

The place where we stayed rented 16-foot skiffs with a center well with Evenrude motors so we could putt around.

We used live shrimp as bait and the owner of the camp would go out with his wife in their 16-foot skiff into Lake Pontchartrain and would troll a 16-foot net to catch the shrimp.

One day he and his wife returned to the dock. He was beat up and she was very upset.

Seems a tarpon had jumped into the skiff and flopped around before they could get him out. No broken bones but the old guy was beat up.

The showed everyone the tarpon's scales.

So a large fish jumping into a boat can happen. Glad everyone is OK.

There was an episode of river monsters I believe where J.Wade was on a river in the Midwest (maybe) that was heavily populated with Asian Carp (This is the Snake Head episode) and they took off on a special made boat with netting. There were thousands of these carp jumping everywhere out of the water, it was shocking to see, and they were upwards of 40 lbs some of them.

So watch your back, they are live ones!

For sure they do. I wouldn't be on the water with anything except my Shimanos!

i live near a stretch of the illinois river that is considered one of the most populated areas for asian carp. On 90% of my casts my lure bumps into them. All the other game fish have all but dissapeard. This area used to be called the "sauger capitol of the world." Now it is just a mud puddle FULL of asian carp. Being the resourceful fishermen that i am, i didnt want to spend hundreds of dollars on a bowfishing setup. So i bought several snagging hooks, its a fun way to way an afternoon after work. I have caught over 100 fish in a day, with a average weight of 12 lbs. They are a fun fighting fish, just sad how bad they can turn a fishery. On sunday afternoons well go hang out at the ramp and theres always people with black eyes, broken windshields, etc.

Why is it bad to have grass carp in a pond?

I have like 3 or 4 of em so if it's bad ima kill em

The Asian carp are different than grass carp but grass carp can eat all the weeds out of a lake and make it difficult for bass fry and forage species to survive and that can hurt the bass population. If it's a subdivision pond don't let them see you pulling them out of there though.

AK, depends on the pond and who manages it. Grass carp can be an effective weed control, they could be sterile and their quantity could be estimated for the size of the water
