Super User Root beer Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 Every now and then I have random pain or discomfort in my leg or hip. Ibuprofen doesn't help, so I was wondering what over the counter drugs work for you guys for pain? Quote
Super User tomustang Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 None. Go to the doctor. Quote

Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 None. Go to the doctor. x2.you don't want it to become a "pain in the ars," LMAO. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 Root Beer, my wife is going under the knife today for her 6th back surgery to add to her neck and hip surgeries so she knows pain. Pain is a sympton that something is wrong. As Tom D. said, go to a doctor and have it checked out. I use Aleve. Works great for my two broken down knees, one which has to be replaced sooner or later and the other just hurts. (arn't football and basketball great sports????) There are pain doctors out there but they are only good when you can't do anything else to aleviate the pain. So I "X2" for Tom D. and ask you to go to the doctor and get to the bottom of the pain problem and have it corrected. Let us know what you do. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 Take everyone's advice and visit your doctor. You'll either find out that its short term curable, or in the worse case, something that could become a life long affliction without treatment. I've limped along on a pair of knees that get worse with every passing year because I didn't follow a doctor's advice when I had the chance to. The inability to climb a ladder or rising up from your knees on the floor without pain is not what you want to look forward to. Edit: Of course if you've already gone through extensive knee surgery that we didn't know about, I'd suggest a half dozen tumblers of Vodka Martinis whenever you feel a twinge! Quote
Super User Root beer Posted July 2, 2012 Author Super User Posted July 2, 2012 Let me clear something up, I had bone graft surgery last December. They cut a bone out of my hip, cut leg up and it left a gap between my fibula and knee cap. The bone from my hip went between that gap, then a plate was inserted to hold it in place. I now have bone cement (from my first knee surgery when I was 12, now 22), a plate and 4 screws in my leg. I've been released from my doctor's care a couple weeks go. Free to do however I feel I can do. I've rode 10 miles of mountain biking a couple times this month already. Occasionally I'll feel sore and will not ride for day or three and the pain would go away and I'll ride again without feeling pain after that ride. So, I haven't develop a pattern of what makes my pain comes back. My doctor said for me to quit doing things if I'm in pain, if it persist for a week call him back. Basically, I was wondering what over counter pain reliever work best when I have pain at night or something, but yes if it persistent for a week I'm calling him back. It has yet to do that and hopefully never will. I really don't want go back under the knife or go through that crap again. I managed to get through the last few months dealing with my leg and got out of my final semester of college with a 3.0. Screw that, never again! I may just stick to booze. Just enough to numb it. ha. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted July 2, 2012 Author Super User Posted July 2, 2012 It could have been worse. Ah well. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 There's almost always more to the story, isn't there? Advil works for me. You can go up to four pills, if needed. That's is prescription strength, though. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 Instead of MASKING the pain with pills just so you can ride 10 miles, how about NOT riding 10 miles. Pills aren't going to FIX your knee so that you can have full function like you did before you had surgery. You' are now limited to what you can do. Follow your doctors orders and just stop when it starts to hurt. No need to push beyond that. Quote

Super User slonezp Posted July 2, 2012 Super User Posted July 2, 2012 Jack n' Coke. Your welcome. Minus the coke and pain meds and whiskey don't mix. I learned the hard way. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 3, 2012 Super User Posted July 3, 2012 Having had knee surgery three times, with a partial replacement the last, your story and film makes my knee hurt. My solution for managing pain is a combination of Ibuprofen and acetaminophen. It's better than nothing. Sometimes walking or fishing causes my knee to hurt. I walk and fish anyway. With the damage you have to your knee, it is going to hurt whether you ride your bike or not. You have to figure out what your limitations are, and try to find a compromise that allows you to live as normal a life as possible. Good luck. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 3, 2012 Super User Posted July 3, 2012 There is pain, and there is pain. Some is a warning to stop doing what you are doing. Other times, it's not. For the most part, I am very fortunate, and thankful, to be pain free. But when I have persistent pain, I see the appropriate doctor. In the case of persistent pain in the large joint of my thumb I went to see a doctor who specializes in hands. Took an xray and I have an arthritic condition in my thumb. He offered five options. The first was to ignore it, if I could. I would not be causing more damage to the thumb by using it. The options progressed from a cortisone shot to surgery. He suggested that I try glucosomine and chondroitin. Studies showed it to be helpful for some with elbow pain caused by arthritis. It has no bad side effects and I could stop taking it at any time. I tried it, and the joint pain went away. I also had a burning pain in my elbow when I would lift something like a pot of water and turn my arm to dump it. That also went away. That was four years ago and I have been pain free in the thumb joint and the elbow since. The main thing is to be sure that you are not causing damage by your activities. That's something only your doctor can tell you. Quote

royal0014 Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Here's food for thought: No matter what you take or why, most of that stuff has liver and /or prostate warnings on the label. Read 'em! Quote
Traveler2586 Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 How long has it been since your surgery? Recovery could take a year or more for things to settle out. You may be doing too much to soon. Follow your doctors advice, he knows you and your problem first hand and is the only person who should advise you on your activitiies. Quote

He told me if I'm hurting don't ride, if I'm not, go for it. I just forgot to ask him about certain over the counter that could work better than others. That the only thing I want to know. lol. I rode the other day and had no post ride pain. Ibuprofen just doesn't really help me with pain at all. Recently, I went a week without really having any soreness or discomfort then the next week i had a random discomfort that made it hard to sleep (I have to sleep with pillow between my knees to prevent them from hitting each other.), I just wanted know a good over the counter reliever that could work fast for times like this. Traveler2586 Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Give your doctors office a call with your question, his staff will relay it and call you back with his answer, It's a common way to handle a quick question with out a visit. Edit: Any opinions you receive here (and you've gotten some good ones) should be discussed with your doctor before taking action. IMHO, it's going to be a while before things settle down for you, especially at bed time. But hang in there and communicate with your doctor frequently., he may prescribe something to help you at bed time. I broke my back in Oct 2010 and I'm still recovering. I had a big problem at night with my spine transitioning from vertical to horizontal so my doctor gave me a Rx to help me sleep and it did the trick. I'm at the point that an occasional Tylenol will answer the need if I've been active on a rocking boat all day. You'll get back to normal, just don't try to rush it, it takes time. Quote
