A bass inhaled my $13 frog today. It was down his throat so only the leg were exposed. When I tried to get it, it's throat muscles swallowed it even more. I cut the line and let the fish go.

I started wondering if the fish is going to die anyway. I suppose the plastic could dissolve and pass but a set of frog hooks? Should I have just killed it quickly? I don't know that I could esp since I caused the injury in the first place, I suppose a chance to live is better than killing it...

On the plus side I had extra frogs. The fish didn't seem to mind the $7 strike king one although the ackall iobee was softer and I didn't miss as many fish.

Found a great small private lake. The fish destroy frogs at dusk every night. I got a small boat and trolling motor and it's a blast. All quality fish too. I've thought of filing down the barbs. The fish are sucking these things down so far that it's taking a long time to dislodge the hooks. Plus it's hurting the fish unnecessarily.

Those are the ones I clean and put in the freezer...I release most of the fish I catch but when I get one that swallows a hook I go ahead and clean it and put it up b/c odds are after you cause the damage when you pull the hook out after a swallow its not gonna make it anyway.

You shoulda killed the fish and saved your lure. You could have eaten it or tossed it back as turtle food. I'm sure the fish died with your lure stuck in its throat.

^^^this. plus killing one bass isnt going to destroy the population...

I agree. Clean it. If you dont eat Bass then give it away...

It didnt survive.

well the fish swallowed the lure. The hooks were backwards, so if I pulled, they would have gotten more lodged. I didnt pull on them too much as it seemed like the fish's throat muscles were bringing the lure down into its stomach. It was alive and well when I released it.

I knew I should have killed it but something was telling me that its absolutely imperative to get the fish back in the water alive and well. There are a ton a bass in the lake. AND it had my $13 frog!!!!

The Jackall Iobee frogs are awesome. I caught almost every fish that hit it. Its soft and its profile allows for better hooksets. I switched to a KVD frog after and missed a lot more fish. They still love any frogs there.

Funny because my friend was throwing senkos and getting all dinks. He wouldnt put a frog on even thought my fish were twice the size. he just got into bass fishing and really has confidence in the senkos.

This is still a blood sport. You should have recovered your lure,

the fish has no chance of survival.

I know. I know. I still think about it. There are tons of bass in this lake too.... It was about 3lbs. Lived a decent life up to that point!

sometimes, if im by myself, ill make a promise to the fish that if they bite my lure I will release them. I cant break a promise like that. I didnt make that promise to this one. Should have sent him to the Leatherman guillotine.

What if it dies and another fish eats it, lodginf the frog in ITS throat. THen THAT one dies and a turtle eats it and IT chokes on the frog....Then the turtle dies and a bird eats it and IT CHOK....

oh man. I could wipe out the entire lake ecosystem. I better go fish and see if I can get him!

If you pull on your line you can often get your bait to pull further up out of the throat. With something as big as a frog bait you'd be better off tearing the bass up trying to get it out and letting him go that way. I highly doubt it will be able to survive with that bait in it's mouth or dislodge the bait.
