hi everybody,

im making a trip up to Minnesota here in a month. my plan was to buy a rod to go with the stradic fh2500 i own but the more research i do i might just end up getting a bait casting setup becasue i want to fish top water with poppers and spinner baits and also fish crank baits. the last time i bought a bait caster it got tangled up constantly and i could not cast more then 15 feet. im guessing i set it up all wrong. anyway i dont have it anymore. do yall have and bait casting combos. im wanting to spend less then 200. or maybe ill just stick with using my spinning real and buy a new rod... what do yall think?

Not trying to tell you what to do, so go ahead and get that baitcaster if you want to. However, the point I wanted to make is that you can do just fine with those baits on spinning equipment if you decide not to make a purchase.

Regardless, good luck and hope you end up at some of the best ones of those 10,000 lakes.

Stick with the spinning unless you want to get the baitcaster now and begin practicing with it. People try casting reels by going right out on the water with them and end up in a mess, so I tell everyone that asks about learning to use one to get it and spend a few hours a day with it in your yard or a field to get use to it before going on the water. A casting reel is a great piece of equipment if you take the time to learn to use it, but if work or other obligations make it hard to find the time to put into it then your best bet is to invest in a new spinning rod.

Get the baitcaster. It will be usefull for later on too. Get a Citica and put it on a Sellus rod. That should be a good solid setup for $200.

i think i will stick with my spinning reel then, it will be cheaper to just get a new rod. any suggestions on what type of rod to get, trying to get one between 100 to 150. i just have no idea what length, action, power, or brand to get.

Take a look at the Fenwick Elite Tech smallmouth spinning rods, they are in your price range and are excellent rods. I think with a 2500 size reel and from the baits you wanted to fish I would say 6'9" M-XF, this is the perfect set up in terms of versatility as it does a few things exceptionally well but it handles most baits and techniques pretty good. The length is long enough that you can get good casts but it isn't so long that it becomes clumsy in small areas, and the medium power will handle just about any normal size bait from 1/8oz and up. The extra fast action is what makes this great for shaky heads, that and the fact that is is really sensitive, and the amount of backbone lets you get great hook sets when using tubes or texas rigged worms and small to medium sized jigs.
