LunkerLust Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Late last year, I picked up a St Crois Triumph BC rod and a Cabela's Prodegy reel, which was made by Daiwa, for wormin' and tubes. Started using the rig this year and got a couple of small bass. Last week I flipped a tube into the pads and got a good bite, 4-5 lber, I'd guess. So I set the hook, hard, and the reel pops off of the rod! Fish gone. I put it back together and hand tightened the rig as much as I could, but it only happened again. When I got home, I tried the reel in my Team All star rod and All Star Platinum rod , and the same thing, the reel moved back and forth in the reel seat and I was able to pull it out no matter how hard I hand tightened it. So I tried the reel in an old Daiwa BC rod and it holds fine??? Anyone ever have anything like this happen to them, with Daiwa gear or any other brands? Also, do you ever use pliers to tighten down the reel ??? I never did. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 1, 2012 Super User Posted July 1, 2012 Sounds like something is wrong with the seat. Using pliers will not fix this. Usually the threads are slipping under stress, allowing the reel to come loose. Tie your line to a tree, and watch what happens as you apply pressure. Good luck. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 1, 2012 Super User Posted July 1, 2012 I've never had it happen yet. I never use pliers. I have the older model Prodigy. It is one of my reels that hasn't been used yet. Just tried it on rods from 3 different companies then gave up. It doesn't move on any of them when finger tight. Is the foot broken on your reel? No idea what else could possibly be the cause. Quote

Possible but not likely unless the OP is even unluckier than I am. I admit to being totally in the dark as to what could be wrong. Never had such a problem with any of my reels...baitcasting or spinning. I don't see how the foot could come out once the cover has been tightened down over it. EDIT: I did have one reel that required extra effort to keep it from minutely shifting in the seat. I assumed that at least one of the feet was thin allowing it to shift a bit. Never came out though. I have seen suggestions of shimming, using tape to keep the reel from moving in the case of movement on the rod when tightened. If the foot is too large to fit a seat properly, I would take it back. CFFF 1.5 Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Sounds like the reel needs to be shimmed up. I have to do this on a few of my rods. I usually take some think cardboard like from a cereal box and cut to the right lenght and 2x the width of the reel seat so it can be folded in half. I then place the cardboard on the rod and then place the reel on top of that and tighten it down. This should work for you. Quote
