Also just make sure your drag knob isnt too loose. If you keep your drag knob tight, you wont cast as far but you will never get backlashes. As you get more confident you can slowly start loosening your drag knob.

Another thing I do especially when its windy, is keep my thumb almost touching the spool. When. I backlash the reel I can feel it the second the lure leaves my pole. If I smash my thumb down, I still have a backlash but a very small one and not one of epic porportions.
