shaun_reid Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Twice this sumer I have had line break the line around my spool. First time was with line that I had strung up since last summer so I figured that it was just old. Today I had 15 lb trilene fluorocarbon break around my spool after being on for two days. Both of these happened on two different reels and two different kinds of line. Could this be a user error or could it be that I had old line on the first and some defective fluorocarbon the second time? I have never had this happen to me before these two. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Line goes on the outside of your spool... Not the inside Quote
shaun_reid Posted June 30, 2012 Author Posted June 30, 2012 Lol well obviously but I'm not sure how to word it. The line wrapped around the spool is breaking.. Not the line in the rod. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 30, 2012 Super User Posted June 30, 2012 If it's different lines and different reels sounds like user error. Is the line breaking when you first tied your knot? I don't understand why line would break at the spool if the line was already loaded up. I've used a number of different spool knots, arbors, unis, a few overhand knots, even just tape with no knot, I have never had the problem you are experiencing. Could there be a sharp edge someplace that you are rubbing against? Quote
jimmykm21 Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Look at all your line guides very closely . Maybe there is a rough or sharp edge the line sometimes rubs up against. Also check your bail if it's a spinning reel. Maybe a sharp edge on it somewhere. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted June 30, 2012 Super User Posted June 30, 2012 I think during a backlash, your line got a kink in it somewhere, and that's where it broke, but that's just my opinion Quote
NBR Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 What has been said. Also if on a baitcaster check the level wind guide. Mono stored with out sunlight and temperature extremes lasts for years. Quote
KingMidas Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 If your guides have sharp edges you might be fraying your line like ppl have already said. What I thought of first is that maybe while your spooling your line it gets frayed/damaged in some way. Make sure everything is smooth.... Smooth baby smooth.... Lol Quote
shaun_reid Posted July 1, 2012 Author Posted July 1, 2012 I think during a backlash, your line got a kink in it somewhere, and that's where it broke, but that's just my opinion This sounds like it could be it.. Sometimes if I back lash a tiny bit I won't pull it out thinking I can just cast it out. Better be sure just to pull the line out and not ignore it lol. Thanks for the help! Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted July 1, 2012 Super User Posted July 1, 2012 If you make a cast with a loop or a partial backlash, your line will slap the inside of the reel dozens of time during that cast. (buzzing sound) This will weaken your line in that one spot and it will eventually cause it to break. This is especially true with fluorocarbon and co-polymer line. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 1, 2012 Super User Posted July 1, 2012 I think during a backlash, your line got a kink in it somewhere, and that's where it broke, but that's just my opinion X2 This was going to be my suggestion. Kink flurorcarbon and not cut it off below the kink...kiss your lure goodbye. Quote
